I am in the market for a new caravan or a newer caravan than what I already have and I keep coming across caravans that are well below what they should be like £3500 for a 2008 6 berth which I would imagine should be double the price. They are on Friday Ad, Caravan Club Classifieds etc should I be wary of private sales such as these?

I imagine if the seller were to auction them, they would get far more than the add would suggest.

I am looking at 2001 6 berth Abbey Spectrum 620, Lunar Solar Eclipse 615, Avondale Argente 650 or the likes with double end seating for my big family. At the moment, these are like hens teeth to get hold of but there are plenty of newer ones at lower prices, is the market flooded with second hand caravans, thus lowering the prices or do you think its a scam?

You can always tell a scam as seller will want you to pay over money before seeing caravan & I would hope nobody is daft enough to do that. Even with 'legitimate' sellers where you do actually see & inspect caravan before payment you need to establish caravan is seller's to sell so you should always check Cris reg is current on hpi website. Cost is £14.95.

All the scams usually state that the seller is out of town at the mo so send you payment and they will deliver the caravan to your house ........................yeah right

Some insurance companies have been providing vans to flood claimants, friend got one last year for what he reckoned was a bargain price ie half what he'd seen at a dealers, a Swift if I remember rightly. It was bought from the insurance direct though - I think advertised in Autotrader.

I saw and replied to one the other week. It was 2010 bailey ranger 505 and they asking for £5995!! I pointed out in my email that the van was probably worth between 8 - 10k private and obviously a bit less at the dealers. They replied they just wanted a family to enjoy it and were prepared to tow it all the way from Belgium for me to view...as if!! Anyway got an email a week later from caravan selecta saying the advert was being removed and I should not have any more correspondence with seller.

I know its not foolproof, but sometimes the emails are in broken English too, not saying that always means a scam, but that with the above usually means it is.

In responce to nutkins' post about towing van from belgium, i'm in correspondence with someone from france about a van here is the actual text i had this morning.

""""Like i said , the caravan is located in France but if you are really interested we can tow it to South Wales and we will be there Saturday 23rd February. Is that ok with you? Please don`t understand me wrong but first of all i need a guarantee from you that you are not making bad jokes and you are a serious buyer . Two weeks ago a buyer told me that he'll buy our caravan , so we must meet in Dover. We came to Dover because we trusted his word, but when we arrived he messed us around, so we lost money and precious time on his promise. I don't want to ask you to send me any money in advance, I just want to see that you are a serious buyer. I will come only for a serious deal. If you don't want to buy it after you will inspect it, no problem, but I need to be sure that you will be there.
I just spoken with my husband and we want this transaction to be managed by escrow.com , they are the most safety escrow service in the word and protect the buyer and the seller in the same time.( they are recommended by ebay, autotrader and all important classifieds websites). Also we just read that they have now brokers in all European countries to offer fast transactions for their customers , so if you agree with our terms our transaction will be managed by an UK broker.
This is the only way that we can do the transaction, hope that you understand.
Look forward to hearing from you.""""

After asking for the CRis number and Vin Number for my own checks this is the reply i had a few minutes ago.

""""The caravan is in perfect condition ready for caravanning with no bad record , also will come with FSH , we have all documents and manuals.I am very sorry but our lawyer advised us to not provide the CRIS or VIN number to anyone on the internet as we will meet the buyer and he will be able to check them.As you know for us will be a long way , for this time we want to be sure that everything will be ok,that is the reason that we choose escrow.com.We are very serious about this sale , i have attached a copy of my ID,but please understand that we lost time and money last time when we had a meeting with the buyer from dover and we will not come again just for a few words that the money are waiting there .
After i read about them i understand how they work and i will explain you again :
-i will start the transaction through their system, i will pay the escrow fee
-they will confirm you the transaction and will require a deposit of 50% sent to their bank account(will be an uk bank account because our transaction will be managed by an uk broker)
-once they have the confirmation from you that you done the transfer , will inform us to proceed with the meeting
-you will meet us and you will have a couple of days to check the caravan and the documents, 3 days i think
-if you would like the caravan and you want to buy it , they will request the remaining balance to be sent and will release the funds to me.
-if the caravan is not like we described and you don`t want to buy it , you will ask for a refund and the money will be in your bank account in the same day.
Just tell us if you want to go ahead as soon as possible as we have other buyers who are interested and we do not want to waste their time."""""

What do you think about that?
What about escrow.com are they legit?

mike

This is the exact same email I had the other week after which caravan selecta asked me stop all correspondence, then removed the advert. If they were serious about selling the van and didn't want to 'lose money and precious time' as they put it, they could have simply sold to a dealer in their country, who'd have probably given them 'more' than their asking price and saved them the hefty costs of towing too and from the UK.
These were the figures presented to me...
Bailey Ranger 500/5 2010
Seller (in Belgium) - £5995
Private - £9000
Forecourt - £10000
Presuming that a dealer would offer around 8 - £8500 it doesn't make sense, why bother towing to the UK and selling at vastly reduced price...just throwing 2500 - £3000 away approx.

I'm laughing here at the attempts here to unravel the thought processes of a Nigerian scammer...They've probably never been to Europe, they probably couldn't even point out UK & France on a map. The reason these scams attract so much discussion is that we wish somebody really would sell us an £8k caravan for £4k...It does give insight into why some folk do get scammed, its because they so desperately want it to be a genuine bargain.

Scamming 'kits' are available for sale in third world countries. Template letters & lists of email addresses etc. Its just somebody sitting in a grotty wooden shack somewhere.

Its well known that 'sucker lists' of postal & email addresses exist & are sold all over the world. These are just lists of those who have responded to scammer communications in any way at all, even as described in this thread which is why entering into dialogue with any obvious scammer is pointless.

If it looks too good to be true it is & that includes caravans that really exist, with the 'owners' offering to meet & do the deal at motorway services etc. People have also been mugged for large amounts of cash after being lured to an ebay sale of a very cheap car for example.
