I'm new here and never had a caravan! However I did have a 32 foot yacht and never had condensation problems. At the end of the season I removed all the sails, mattress's, cushions and anything else that would absorb moisture. I left two small vents open and never ever had problems associated with dampness or condensation. Also bedding etc was nice and dry/fresh for next season.

Regards

Norman

tentz.

we don't heat an empty caravan.

i am just saying that they recommend heating and ventilation in the home to prevent condensation. if it works in the home the same principal should aplly to caravans.

we can't heat the caravan because it is 10 miles away in storage.

we know that condensation causes black mould on external windows & walls, clings to clothing and curtains causing unpleasant smells..

my job up until retirment involved me inspecting empty properties

anyone who has been in a property that has stood empty for a good while will have seen the mould stain, wallpaper hanging off the ceilings and and walls . and noticed the smell of damp.

our thinking is that if an empty property can suffers in this way then the same rule must apply to an empty caravan.

all we are hoping to do is limit the damage caused by condensation until we can get back in the caravan ( asap )and get it warmed back up.

Hmm here is my theory. Yes there will be moisture in the van but if ventilated it will dry out on warmer days. Collecting moisture in salt traps retains the water in the van and allows it again to create moisture. If the van is ventilated the evaporation process should remove the moisture. As I said earlier on my theory.
The link may give you an interesting explanation.

An empty house and a caravan are not the same by any means. Most empty houses are not well ventilated, and in older properties there is often a problem with either rising damp, or damp coming through walls and the roof.

If all the vents in the caravan are clear, there should be no problem.

Heat yer caravan, man.  You`ll have no condensation and it costs so very little.  And if the van`s at home, you can have a cup o` coffee in it and escape from The Wise and Wonderful One . . .
