Not sure where to post this. To cut a long story short, im looking to take the littlun camping when the weather picks up and going down the route of getting whats needed. Im in the motion of dealing with the cooking side of things and popped into a local costco to see what they had on offer. Now its a bit bigger than you would normally use for a portable cooker but the quality is excellent for £90, now the only problem is that i have a 15k butane tank at home but this states it uses propane. What are the differences and could butane be used or will it destroy anything? Any help much appreciated.

you have a couple of options here,

if you plan on camping in colder weather then propane is the option, as butane will not "gas"under a couple of degrees.

if you wanted to use the 15kg butane bottle( "which is quite large for camping- you may be better swopping it for a 7kg") , then you would have to swop the regulator supplied with the grill (red one)

for a butane regulator (blue one)

Thankyou for your reply stu. I dont plan to go camping winter time unless the weather over night tkes a sudden dive. The butane can ive inheritated has a blue 28mbar regulator already attached to the top. Now the grill im looking at has has a regulator in the box at 38 (i think). Does this mean the grill requires a certain pressure to work correctly? (38mb)? Im really sorry if this is not coming across clearly, this is all new to me. Ive read some articles stating using butane on a propane cooker will damage the jets/burners, is there any truth in this? Many thanks

Have a look at this website as it provides information you need to know about LPG cylinders etc.

Most bottled-gas camping stoves are designed to run off butane at 28mb or propane at 37mb, but as suggested a smaller cylinder might be more convenient for camping - many people find the smallest Calor (or Flogas) size of 4.5Kg or a Campingaz (which is butane) R907 - smaller, lighter, available on the Continent, but more expensive Kg for Kg - quite adequate.

Thankyou for your reply. Do you know if theres any truth that using butane on a propane grill and visa verse will damage jets/burners?

Can't remember hearing/reading of such damage, and can't understand why it might occur, if the stove uses whichever gas at the appropriate pressure - and due to the differing regulator fittings it would be (almost!) impossible to use the wrong gas/pressure combination.

If the cooker is the the one in the Amazon link then I don't think it is suitable for camping use & appears to be from America, the '20lb regulator' gives it away. You can see hose & regulator here & if this is same as yours it does not appear to be suitable for any UK gas bottle, in the Sears link there is a 'Blue Rhino' propane bottle which is USA, why it is advertised in £s, I don't know, it states not available for international shipping from US, but I guess this is correct gas bottle for your cooker. Its possible you could cut off existing regulator & attach suitable UK, ie Calor regulator, butane or propane & try it. Provided it is compatible with UK gas bottles you could use either butane or propane.

I suggest you take it back for refund & get a proper camping cooker, these can use either butane or propane bottles. Unless yours has has a different fitting to allow attachment of UK gas hose & regulator then they should not even be selling this cooker here as it appears to be set up for US gas bottle not available in UK..

If your cooker does in fact have a nipple to allow rubber pipe fitting in place of hose & regulator in Sears link then you can use any UK bottle butane or propane I would think. The pic in your Amazon link does not show any pipe but it does look like a screw connector when normal UK camping stove connector is nipple with push on hose secured with jubilee clip.

Sorry to be so long winded, but I've tried to cover every angle. Personally, I'd take it back & get a proper camping cooker for half the price which you could definitely use with your existing gas bottle.

I agree with Tentz. And it only has a grill, you can't cook with pans on a grill. You need at least one burner for a saucepan for the tin of beans!
