Hi all.
I bought an old Swift caravan a couple of months ago to take to Bulgaria where I have two houses that need doing up. I've spent ages fixing damp and other problems on the Swift, now it's not too bad. I have just found out that I need a reg certificate to get the caravan into the country. The fact is that I do not have one. Just wondering if anyone knows how to go about getting one. I bought the caravan from eBay. Thanks for reading.
UK caravans are not registered as vehicles with dvla but you do have Cris run by hpi for registration which is only voluntary. if your caravan is 1992 or newer it should actually be registered with Cris but the registration may not have been updated by the last several owners. There should be id numbers on windows. You could try updating on hpi website for a small fee but the downside is that if caravan was stolen several owners ago it will show up & cause you problems, usually resolved by paying insurance co. market value for caravan, this of course being worst case senario.
If caravan is older than 1992 I guess you could register it with Cris & hope the documentation is ok. Most European countries register their caravans as vehicles but UK does not which causes problem if you try to register caravan in that country but if you are entering Bulgaria as a tourist towing caravan behind UK reg car I can't really see a problem because presumably anybody can enter Bulgaria on holiday with car/caravan as it is EU or am I wrong?

Most European countries have a separate registration system for trailers, the number is shown on the plate at the rear, unlike the UK where the reg plate of the towing vehicle is displayed. Now it is some years since I retired so I may not be up with current EU legislation but the way we used to get round this is to go to the local AA office and get them to issue a "Carnet de Passage" at a fee of a few quid. This is in the form of a book and allows transit of borders on route and TEMPORARY importation into the country of destination. The trailer must return and the Carnet be discharged at customs upon re-entry to Uk.
If however you intend to leave the trailer in Bulgaria it then becomes an 'Importation' and should be declared to customs. Bulgaria now being a member state there would be no duty to pay but you must be able to show proof of the country of origon and copy invoice showing the value. You might find that a packet of Marlboro' here and there might help. Hope thats of some help although I don't doubt someone will be along that is more au fait with the latest EU regs............Mick
