Hia- I wondered if anyone could help.

We bought a Bailey pageant champagne caravan (about 2001) last year. On our first holiday my partner touched the back of the caravan & received an electric shock.

We realised the carpet was damp by the sink (the seller had said the previous owner had frozen pipes & had gotten some repairs done) so we took off the sink to check. To our horror we realised the waste pipe was hanging off & all the water was going straight onto the fridge.

We dried it all out & re-attached the pipe.

Unfortunately the caravan was still live & you would receive a mild electric shock if you touched it outside.

After a very careful 2 week holiday we returned & saw the man who sold it us (he stores caravans & sells them) he said he would get his man who repairs them to check the electrics.

He told us there was a loose wire in the main switch box so he had wired it back in.

We checked the caravan and it wasn't live any more.

We went on holiday to realise the water would not work at all (it made no sound etc) so when we returned we told the man again-who said he would find out what had been wired (as this obviously had now stopped the water pump working.)

I am now dubious about letting this repair man do anymore as I don't think he is qualified.

Has anyone got any advice for things to check etc or had a similar problem?

Thanks for any advice, Dora-helen.

The word incompetence springs to mind here so my advice is to do what michael suggests and get it checked out by a qualified electrician as you really can't afford any more bodge up jobs by this person.

Doubt if the waterpump failure is related to the loose wire in the mains circuit. The water pump is 12v and runs from the battery or transformer. There are two different methods of activating the pump wonder which yours is. First is a micro switch at each tap, second is a pressure switch usually under a seat near the water inlet. Have you tried turning on the bathroom tap, if the pump then functions it means that the micro switch at the kitchen is faulty. If nothing happens when all the taps are on then it sounds like the pump is faulty. should the system have a pressure switch as opposed to micro switches then this can be adjusted, your handbook will tell you how to do this. After carrying out these simple checks and still no luck, check the fuse. If this is blown replace, if it blows again then it comes down to the pump itself. The impellers in these are prone to seizing and can be freed off with a bit of patience. Cost of a new pump probably about £35, last one I bought was anyway. Wouldn't hurt to get the mains checked out by an electrician as having live bodywork is a bit worrying.
Hope this helps tho probably confuses even more.
Mick

I would ring the man you bought the van from and tell him that you are far from happy . Explain that you again have gone away and the water was not working. I would also tell him that the person who is doing these repairs needs to be Qualified and if he is not he can be sued.He knows that you have his tel no and place of work so if he has any sense at all he will sort this out and i hope he can reinburse you and your husband these people are risking peoples lives and its not on.

I suspect you probably have a wire off the tap microswitch either from getting caught pulling the fridge out or from fixing the leak.

If moisture touches something live the moisture will conduct the voltage although it does have some resistance.    The live back panel would probably have been cured by drying it out alone.

Get a electrician in to do a electrical condition report on the van,and he should also be able to check the water pump for you whilst he is at it.

Thanks so much for the common sense replies :-)

I thought an electricain would be best as we are obviously not electrical minded!

I'll definately get my partner to do the checks on the water pump & the taps too-we have all the books so hopefully he can follow your advice & those.

Thanks again-we'll get onto it now holidays are coming again!
