We are having a problem. We have a fixed regulator and for a second time in a couple of years our gas has stopped. I have checked we do have gas. Can I change the fixed regulator for the old fashioned clip on like we used to have? Or is there a cheaper version that can be bought? Thanks

I seem to recall they changed the pressure when they introduced the fix regulators so going backwards might not be a good idea. I have had two caravans with fixed regs and not had an issue however I do always turn the gas off, even overnight. Not sure if that makes a difference?

I changed from the bulkhead to the old style regulator so that I could use the 7 kg butane bottles with the clip on regulator Not had any problems everything works as it should we use everything on gas as we prefer not to use ehu

There are cylinder mounted regulators that work at 30 mB as they are used on German made caravans and motorhomes. I have one of them on my present 2008 caravan and had one on my 2002 caravan. These units are single stage unlike the troublesome dual stage regulators and in that probably lays the weakness of the latter units.
So changing to a cylinder mounted unit is physically an option. Being a gas system the change needs to be done by somebody competent to do so.
An easy source for these regulators would be dealers who sell German motorhomes.
IMO the system with a cylinder mounted regulator where there is no high pressure connecting hose is a far better concept; as an engineer I can't see why the UKs NCC chose the less satisfactory route.

You are probably using a Truma regulator. You could try swapping it for a different brand of bulkhead regulator. The Gaslow reg has a 5 year guarantee if used with a stainless steel pigtail.

Rather than putting a regulator in that lets the condensates (gunge) pass through it and possibly cause blockages on appliances and internal pipes why don't you simply install a filter prior to the regulator. If installed correctly it will not only act as a filter but also raise the hight of the connection from the bottle which will go some way to draining the condensate back into the bottle.

If you change to a bottle mounted regulator I would check your insurance is still valid as a result of the modification. It will probably be ok but it is better to check first.

I am sure other more knowledgeable persons will confirm the above as being the best long term solution.

Out of interest is the problem any worse with propane than with butane or vice versa?
