Yep, it probably saves the manufacturers at least £2 a caravan but at the same time it can shake the hell out of your prized possession and lead to premature failure of components.

The guy who does my car tyres in Leeds is also a caravanner, and he swears by caravan wheel balancing. You know how your car can shake with unbalanced wheels? Well your caravan is doing exactly the same thing. The only difference is you are not in the van to feel it! I would imagine that it would frighten the life out of you if you were!
The reason why caravan manufacturers don't balance the wheels on caravans is because they are imported with the wheels and tyres already fitted to the chassis so it would be too time consuming to remove each wheel (especially on twin axles) to be checked and balanced respectively. This extra operation would also hold up production and to any company time is money therefore any production hold up would not be cost effective due to lost time but as long as is not a safety issue they won't alter their programme to suit the customer. So it's best to get your wheels balanced whether your caravan is new or second hand as it might just save you losing a road wheel due to vibration.
I used to run a garage and have seen what an unbalanced wheel can do when it's on a wheel balancing machine.the main thing is the wheel nuts can be unscrewed by the vibration.the other it is shaking your lovely caravan to bits inside.not worth leaving it to chance.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
The reason wheels are not balanced from the factory is because it is not necessary , thousands of trailers use alko chassis and they run for years without balancing the wheels It doesn't do any harm to have them balanced and for what it costs at the time of fitting new tyres you might as well do it
But I think it is very disingenuous to claim that unbalanced wheels will come loose or shake the caravan to bits wheels come loose because they are not fitted correctly even if they are balanced , the flexing of a caravan due to poor road surfaces does far more damage most of any unbalanced forces will be absorbed by the elasticity of the suspension
by all means have wheels balanced. but lets keep it in proportion
If wheel balancing is not necessary then why do it on all cars? The reason is because you would feel the bounce in a car whereas in a caravan you can't because the law doesn't allow us to travel in it so were blind to the fact. Basically, what the body doesn't feel the brain doesn't know but at the end of the day the choice is yours whether you have them balanced or not.

Are you sure about this Tango? The last time I saw a load in a 13.5m trailer from Alko all the chassis parts were knock down kits ready for the caravan manufacturer to assemble, likewise I think it is the manufacturers who purchase the tyres and rims rather than Alko.

If it was not correct I would not have said it.i could show you film clips of vibration possibilities but do not want to go that far.in my engineering training we had to learn all about this.

Your not a customer of mine are you !!!! I certainly only fit and balance every wheel no matter what it is on .. And I can say 100% it does not cost £2 a wheel to balanc a wheel
For new caravans it depends on factory. I have seen complete caravan chassis with wheels being delivered but if you look at caravan factory vids. on youtube they are assembling chassis rails themselves. It would be quite possible that caravan factory might also source wheels & tyres separately for best deal & then fit tyres at factory. If they balanced as well this would have an extra cost/time per wheel that would amount to many £1000s annually so they don't bother.
