we are starting out and looking for a 4 berth lightweight caravan for me and hubs, and two small children (5 and 3)

needs to be as lightweight as poss as we only have a rover45, hopefully we'll be getting a bigger car when this one dies on us but till then we're stuck with what we've got, but finding a caravan which this car can tow is proving tricky!

from the owners manual it appears that max towing weight is 1000kg

we dont want to spend too much (around 6K) as hopefully we'll be able to upgrade to a larger caravan when we eventually get a larger car

is this an impossible task?

any advice on suitable models to look for would be greatly appreciated

A better bet might be to spend a lot less than £6k on a much older caravan, early 90s, they tend to be less well equipped & insulated & therefore lighter. this sort of thing but obviously check carefully for damp. & this one.

The sterkemann range of caravans are lightweight, they may be worth a look although not sure if they are under 1000kgs

Go on caravans.autotrader.co.uk and search Crown caravans. You will see a good selection around 1000kg well within your budget and they are 1999 models. Our first caravan was a Crown Sovereign and we loved it.

Tentz and birdman - thats really interesting, shows how much of a newbie i am, i sort of thought that newer ones would be lighter, but your info makes complete sense

gazmister, thanks for the tip on the sterkemanns, hadnt heard of them before but a quick search has shown that they tend to be light vans (although not many around)

Philip22 - thanks for the info, i've had a quick look and although its def light enough for us to tow, its perhaps a bit on the small side with two adults and our two marauding children!

jssparkes, thanks for the tip, there were a couple of crown vans which looked nice, good layouts, although would have to check the weight

black fox: i would SO prefer a larger car, but cant bear to part with the old rover yet, it just keeps going, and doesnt cost us any money, so not keen yet to get rid (feels like bad karma lol).

I would love a bigger car and a newer van but as we've not ever had a caravan before i'm a bit nervous of over committing ourselves

really appreciating all replies 17

I have a Eriba Familia its a 4 berth 2 bunks at the front and a big double at the back it weighs 700kg and is so easy to tow. Prices range from £2500 upwards depending on age and spec.
I have an awning by NR awnings and a light weight Soplair awning, both giving 3m x3m extra living space.
Your car will tow it easily.

Another possibility here slightly dodgy feedback though but you are ok provided caravan is 'as described' on listing & if it ain't you can walk away.

Have you considered a folding camper. We pull a pennine fiesta with a Honda jazz. It has two double beds, then the option of under bed tents for when children are older. Only 750kg fully loaded!
