I have just taken delivery of my Reich noseweight guage and now notice it's got the 'single axle' box ticked, whereas our caravan is a twin.

This may be a ridiculous question, but does it actually make any difference? Surely the guage is measuring the weight upon it and that should read the same regardless?

I found this on another website:

The Twin axle version automactically takes into account the different load distribution involved

  • Noseweight gauge with digital readout in 1kg steps
  • Load Cell technology
  • No springs

I would say if you have a twin axle then you should use the twin axle version, although logically I can't see what difference it would make.

Thanks for that. I wonder whether its a sales ploy. Load the price accordingly? A bit like toys aimed at children with special needs, they always seem to have a price increase.

I'm applying logic which leads me to the same conclusion as you though.

I would be interested in others opinions/experiences

Yes I would agree that you're quite right. In my opinion a noseweight gauge is precisely what it does disregards how many axles your trailer has. The recommendation is that you calculate about 7% of the caravan's maximum weight but it's not a hard and fast rule merely just a guide as again it all depends on what the towing vehicle towball weight limit is.

The Reich is electronic, it uses a load cell which is same technology as weighloadas fitted to trucks. To get an accurate reading when loading an 8wheel tipper the buck needs to be raised slightly & ground needs to be reasonably smooth so wheels are not dropped into potholes. This does suggest that there might be a difference in the single & twin axle versions.

If you think of a single axle caravan as a see saw, when you lift the jockey wheel up there is no pressure as the back of the caravan lowers.

On a twin there are 2 axles so when you lift the jockey wheel up the back axle is creating pressure so will alter the reading.

This is why we have 2 models.


So, I guess that means the single axle gauge would give a higher reading? Am I understanding that correct? In which case am I best to swap it then?

Sounds logical but at the moment I can't see how they calculate the load created as a result of the rear axle but I presume they are allowing for the extra 2 inches in hight of the hitch as a result of using the Reich gauge. I use a twin axle version on my tin tent and when checked against a calibrated Milenco nose weight gauge there was a difference of a couple of kg and that was not constant over a few tests so I guess there is a margin of error in both systems.

I feel the same as you and am tempted to use this one for those reasons. As you use both and it's only a couple of kg out, surely it will not have huge impact. I wanted a general idea, and obviously to ensure its not too high/low.

i would think that the item will still give a true reading regardless of number of axles. if you decide to return it our address is 26 tarren way west, moreton,wirral ch46 4tt. please remember to enclose all paperwork and reason for return. the item has to be returned within 7 working days

I appreciate they are replying on the basis I may return though!

If they are offering to refund you I would be inclined to go for it and get a TA version. Not sure how much you paid but there is someone selling the TA version new on ebay at £29 inc delivery which is cheaper than I can find anywhere. Homestead had them at £29 but did not include delivery and it is a trek to go there.
