Just a heads up for anyone towing their caravan or taking to the road in their motorhome after this spell of bad weather, Please make sure that all Ice and snow are cleared from your caravans roof before you set off on your journey.
Today I was following a caravan as it was being towed out of a local storage yard, and as soon as the driver picked up a bit of speed, a huge sheet of Ice came flying off the back of the caravans roof, crashing down onto the road infront of us.
Luckily we were keeping our distance and speed down, so were able to avoid this obsticle, but I shudder to think what would have happened if that occured at speed on a motorway or suchlike, it could have hit someones windscreen and smashed it and caused a nasty accident.

Well said Julia. I checked the rook of my caravan today and whilst it looked clear from the ground there was a large area of snow that had partially melted and then refroze between two rooflights. A lump of ice hitting a Heki could do serious damage. therefore even if you don't care about other road users at least take time to check before towing.

I have now dug my caravan out, the drift around it was about 4 foot, thanks for the advice concerning ice on the roof, I have never had to move snow before a trip so never had to consider it before, I will certainly make sure that the roof is ice free before setting out at the weekend.

Its what we had to do in bad winters before we left the docks, use a ladder to get up onto trailer roof & sweep ice off the top, the cops were waiting outside to nick those with lumps of ice coming off as they drove out of the gates, one had a lump of ice slide off front of roof & chop through the air lines leaving the truck stuck across the road.

Its absolutely the driver's responsibility to clear ice off roof, main problem were always soft roof trailers, either tilt or sliding roof type where sagging roof between supports caused lumps of ice several feet long to form.

This happened on the M56 ,just pass junction 11, Chehire. About a week ago . I was taking the kids to school, came down the slip road ,only to hit standing traffic.Eventually started to move , got about 500 yards on the motorway,we're there was shattered ice everywhere in the inside lane. Right next to the ice on a the hard shoulder, was a silver Mondeo with its windscreen shattered. There for the grace of God . A few minutes earlier it could of been me and my children.

Took me an hour to get the cover off last night. Was frozen solid to the awning rails. Up & down step ladders with watering cans of warm water. But van is beautifully clean underneath. Just swapped to a hardstandind pitch for this weekend. Staff at Northam Farm (Brean) as brilliant as ever.
Cant wait to get away. Cold or not, few days away, change of scenery. Some lovely cold walks on the beach & warm nights in the van. Kids down one end watching a film, me & the wife up the other end reading a books.

Just had a week at Northam Farm, weather wet but no snow, can't understand why they are putting the gravel down on the hard standings, unless it's to save the grass, but it gets everywhere,in the van in your shoes and socks, when it's wet it's a nightmare, but the rabbits love to dig it up

I cant believe that response!!.
so what if a sheet of ice flies off the top of a lorry, and hits, a pedestrian or a motorcyclist or cyclist, with fatal consequences, this should be classed as an unsecure load, and the driver negligent,
supprised it has'nt happened already, seen the ice thing happen often on the motorway.
but I honestly don't know the answer for the drivers, as it would take all day to clear the roofs

I was coming along eastbound the M4 a couple of weeks ago and just east side of the Brynglas tunnels a huge sheet of ice flew from the roof of a vehicle and crashed on the carriageway our side. The ice smashing up and bouncing everywhere may have looked worse than it was but had a motor bike been in the path of it at the time I dread to think of the consequences.
Not really sure what you can do about it with some vehicles though, checking the roof of a caravan or a commercial van is not a problem but some of our lorries are far too high to be inspected for ice on the roof.
