Hi Dave, Cris registration is the equivelent of your cars Log book, and likewise it doesnt gaurantee the quality or condition of a Caravan, nor does it confirm that there is no outstanding finance owing on it. the only thing that it does do is to confirm the name of the last registered keeper, the caravans details including the Cris number which is etched on all the windows, hidden in a computer chip in most recent caravans, out of sight of any thieves should the caravan ever get stolen, (a bit like a dogs microchip) and also states the make, model and weights of the caravan.
Its really down to personal prefarence regards private sale versus dealer sales, the dealer will charge more, but will often give you some warantee, the private sale will often be cheaper, but is often prone to hidden faults such as damp or floor delamination, which need checking before you buy, and if found, unless your a competent DIYer, you would probably be best to walk away and find something better, as these are expensive faults to repair if you end up having to pay a dealer to do them. What ever you buy, a good check over with a decent quality Damp meter on the inside is money and time well spent.
Good luck with your search and above all take your time and dont buy a caravan just because you happen to like its uphostry or layout, you really need to check its working gear as well first.
