Still looking for that elusive first van but I am sure we will find one soon.

If I buy a van that is CRIS registered does that mean it is all ok or do I need to do further checks.

Is it safer to buy from a dealer.

Hi Dave, Cris registration is the equivelent of your cars Log book, and likewise it doesnt gaurantee the quality or condition of a Caravan, nor does it confirm that there is no outstanding finance owing on it. the only thing that it does do is to confirm the name of the last registered keeper, the caravans details including the Cris number which is etched on all the windows, hidden in a computer chip in most recent caravans, out of sight of any thieves should the caravan ever get stolen, (a bit like a dogs microchip) and also states the make, model and weights of the caravan.

Its really down to personal prefarence regards private sale versus dealer sales, the dealer will charge more, but will often give you some warantee, the private sale will often be cheaper, but is often prone to hidden faults such as damp or floor delamination, which need checking before you buy, and if found, unless your a competent DIYer, you would probably be best to walk away and find something better, as these are expensive faults to repair if you end up having to pay a dealer to do them. What ever you buy, a good check over with a decent quality Damp meter on the inside is money and time well spent.

Good luck with your search and above all take your time and dont buy a caravan just because you happen to like its uphostry or layout, you really need to check its working gear as well first.

Julia

As you are a first time owner I would say yes it is safer to buy from a dealer. You should get a warranty.

Damp is the big issue in caravans. There are often horror stories on here. a reputable dealer should not be selling a damp caravan and if it does show signs of damp his warranty should cover it.

A private purchase will be cheaper but if the caravan has damp the cost of repair may well exceed the savings. The seller may not even be aware of the damp.

We are still looking too! Seems when we didn't have the money, there were loads we wanted to buy but now we have the money - nothing!

Think we are going to buy from a dealer

Unlike motor vehicles there is no law that states Cris has to be updated when caravan changes hands. Even if buying from a dealer it would be advisable to do your own Cris check here cost £14.95, before paying for caravan. Often dealers tend not to bother & if you fail to check yourself then at some point if caravan is found to be stolen, ie if serial number is checked by cops for any reason you will lose caravan unless you come to a cash deal with insurer who paid out original owner. This can happen if caravan was stolen several owners ago & then sold on without subsequent Cris checks by new 'owners'.
