We are new to caravanning and have only been away in hrs twice. We have always inflated our car tyres to the max load reading as indicated in the handbook, however I have noticed from being a camper since mid 2000 that I never see caravanners deflate/inflate tyres on site so was wondering does not everybody adjust their tyre pressures accordingly when towing?
If not, what are the reasons for this? I thought it was necessary?
To be honest, once our car tyres are up to towing pressure, I tend to keep them like it for the season.
Our tow car doesn't get used for much else anyway.
I don't think driving around unhitched/unladen with higher than usual tyre pressures is likely to do much harm.
Far more dangerous to have too low a pressure in your tyres in my opinion.

I try were possible to inflate my tyre's to towing spec prior to hitching up near home, then on site I'll gradually deflate while using a decent digital pressure guage to monitor; I've adopted the 'knack' to deflate enough without dropping below the 'solo' pressure.
On the day of leaving (or day before if convenient), I'll pump up again at nearest garage ready for return home.
When rallying we tend not to use the car while on site, so the tyre pressures stay as they are till we're back home.
You are of course assuming that all caravanners bother to check their tyre pressures at all. Not all of them read ukcs so they may not know about stuff like tyre pressures/noseweight/max tow weight etc, etc. But depends how long you are on site for, if a couple days just leave at max pressure if a couple of wks then adjust to unladen if you wish. pressure too low is worse than pressure too high.
Park next to me and you will see a rare site...well I haven't seen it much at all......Before we leave I check tyres and pump up to required pressure using my Michelyn tyre pump. My wife checks the caravan lights before we set of...I check the nose weight before we hitch up.....we check that all doors are locked....check that everything is switched off....dog has seat belt on...and off we go.....
