I used a (cheap) electric winch. The problems were cable length, I had to make various lengths of extension cable so I could pull the van up the drive in stages. Then the winch flew apart so I bought a motor mover

I haven't used a winch or pulley of any sort to move a caravan but I have used various chain blocks and Tirfers to lift heavy objects over many years and good reliable kit for that purpose isn't cheap. You can find cheap ones but you don't want your caravan running away should the job go wrong.

If you can't reverse your van up the drive or adapt the space anywhere on the drive so you could drive up towing the caravan then get the tow ar out again perhaps a mover or winch of some kind is your only option.

Personally I'd rather find the funds for a mover, however, I'd be wary of using a winch to pull a carvan up a steep incline unless you're positive the anchor points for the winch are good & the winch itself is reliable and won't wind off once you stop winching for any reason. Something like a good set of chain blocks or a Tirfer would be my choice if I was going to attempt to winh anything heavy up a slope.

Considering what it would sot to put anchor points in place which are man enough for the job and buy a winch, chain block or tirfer to do the work you won't be far away from the cost of a mover. At least with a mover, it'll be there when ever you want to use it whereas a winch set up will only be at home.

as a backup I have an electric winch which I bolt to the ground I have used this successfully to pull my units up the drive which is very steep.
At a latter date I had movers fitted but I still have the electric winch just in case I have problems with the mover.

No prob with a hand winch, I paid £25 for one about 10 years ago. It still gets used from time to time but no longer need it for the van. Mine is mounted on a steel plate which in turn has a 50mm ball fitted so it can be slotted into the van hitch, the cable is then run out and hooked to an anchorage point and you wind the handle walking along side the A frame as you go. They are fitted with a ratchet so unlikely to run away tho if there is help available, a good idea to have the help ready with some form of chocking at the side by the wheel. The only draw back that once the cable is tensioned, the van will only travel in a dead straight line towards the anchor point. If your drive is straight, a winch is a very simple inexpensive solution...........Mick

thanks mickeyb....might get one....once it is up the slope it is on a fairly big flat space so one sounds ideal for what we need...

I used one for years but beware you should not winch them out s the ratchet on the winch would then need to be disengaged and the cable drum can cause the handle to spin out of control. Also the caravan brakes don't work too good in reverse which makes it a bit iffy getting the van back down the drive.

I now use a front mounted towball which I slot in place when I need it and simply use the car to push the 'van in. I have a motor mover but the front tow ball is quicker and easier with a T/A. The ball is lowered to ensure the rear of the caravan has sufficient ground clearance on the slope which it does no if I reverse in with the normal tow ball.

I've used a hand winch to move a caravan up a very steep slope. I tied a length of timber so it was dragged just behind the wheels so if anything went wrong the caravan only went back a small distance. This also meant I could change the chains several times on the journey as the slope was longer than the winch so I used various chains to get the total distance covered.

We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

I like the idea opf the timber behind the wheels - great idea to overcome the brake and ratchet issues.

Given the choice I would go for the front tow ball every time. It is also handy on site for getting onto tight access pitches.
