just had a chat to my insurance people as i,m due to change cars start of next week . i asked if they had to be informed that i towed as part of the declaration to them .
the reply i got was very interesting especially as our van is only worth a few hundred quid . no you do have to inform them and further info gleaned below ,not sure if this applies with all companies but worth a check .luckily with the office i deal with its been the same girl that deals with my account for the last 7 years
it seems thats as i am fully comp with them( NFU insurance ) ,that when the caravan is attached to the car the caravan is covered third party as well ,so if by chance i was to hit another car or caravan or indeed damage any property it would be covered on insurance .as for my own van the value is so low i would do any repairs myself if needed anyway . that leaves caravan contents but i,m pretty sure my home insurance covers all that anyway .
so if you have a older van don't be bullied into you MUST have insurance cover as your more than likely covered already

When hitched up, the caravan is part of the vehicle and therefore covered by the vehicle insurance. The concern with not having insurance on a caravan is if something were to happen when it is NOT hitched. For example, if it were to roll in strong wind and hit another caravan or a person. This is why caravan storage sites insist on all caravans being insurance.
Having said that caravan storage sites insist on stored caravans being insured, I have only ever been asked for insurance documents by storage sites when first moving there. I have never been asked for proof of renewal.
I now store on my drive way and don't have insurance.

I don't bother to insure my £400 'van, as you point out, its covered for third party risks while towing on any comprehensive car policy.
The point about caravans rolling away/catching fire etc when parked & unhitched is that liability has to be proved, the owner is not automatically liable, ie if vandals pushed caravan down hill & caused damage to property then it would be no point in property owner chasing caravan owner for third party damage.
Its also possible that caravan insurance would refuse to pay out under these circumstances. The owner of damaged property would have to claim from his own insurance. The only way caravan owner might be be liable would be if he caused the damage while moving his own unhitched caravan.
Storage sites require caravan to be insured so owner can claim off his own insurance in case caravan is damaged & not try to claim off site owner who might or might not have caused the damage by his own actions.

Regarding home & contents insurance covering items in the caravan are not automatically insured as you may think. Home and contents is exactly what you are isured for (contents inside the home) but you can usually take out an an add on policy to the existing one to cover any goods taken OUT of the home. These can cover watches, phones, cameras and about anything else but you normally have to stipulate the model number and any identification numbers of any electrical item or phone and this is done so you don't try to claim for any item not being covered or belonging to you personally. Caravan insurance will also cover your contents if you wish but again providing you take out the extra cover on the said policy. If you don't take out the extra cover with either your home and contents or caravan insurance then your'e not covered for any losses of contents at all but don't take my word for it, check with your home and contents insurers and find out you will see if this is correct.

I think I only paid around £50 for the annual insurance on our old van this year - I suspect we will have a bit of a shock when we get round to buying a newer one! A pound a week seemed a fair price for full cover and peace of mind.
