At my caravans second service in Oct 2012 the service dept at my dealers showed me that one tyre was cracking all the way round the wall of the tyre

As the van was only two years old at the time, been used about 6 times and the DOT was 2010 I rang Coachmans. They told me it was down to the suppliers Tyre-Line. Photographs were emailed and after quite sometime I received a letter from Tyre-Line which was a copy of a letter from GITI TIRE (UK) LTD. describing all the technical details of oxidation etc. etc finally ending the letter with 'reject this claim'.

Obviously I was not happy with this outcome so I rang Tyre-Line in the hope I could achieve an amicable outcome and gently saying, without resorting to the small claims court, such as a new tyre at say 50% discount. Oh how wrong I was I was offered a new tyre at £50.00 plus shipping plus vat, plus having to get the tyre fitted and balanced. I left it at that to have a think what to do next.

I rang Tyre-Line later that day asking for my tyre to be returned as I wanted an independent assessor to inspect the tyre. I had spoken to the Caravan Club and two large tyre dealers all agreeing this problem should not have occurred in such a short time and my hopping for a decent discount etc was very reasonable and fair.The PA to the MD said she did not know if they still had the tyre.

I then emailed both parties with the above. I received an email from GITI TYRE with another load of technical stuff but not a word from Tyre-Line to date, three days.

I have my own personal idea's but would be really interested in what you people thought, and if you had any suggestions, about this sorry saga.

There is a date on tyres since when they were made.Seems that the tyres were maybe a couple of years old before being fitted.The date on the tyres i think should correspond with the year of the van if not,then to me they have not fitted new tyres of that year.

tyres should be changed at 5 years.but three years is a bit short.sounds like a cheap tyre fitted.our tyres were 6 years old before changing and showed no signs of failing in any way. not like coachman.

At the second service (where the tyre crack was pointed out) did you obtain a report from the company or engineer to confirm that the two year old tyre was actually defective? If not then you would need this as proof otherwise the tyre company have no reason to reimburse for any costs unless there is sufficient evidence from a reliable source which in this case would be the company that was conducting the service.

On the plus side your service place bringing this to your attention has has saved you a motorway blowout & probably serious damage to caravan by flailing tread which is usual senario.

Whatever else you do you need to replace both tyres, not just the faulty item & replace them with good brand mid range at least. As far as tyre companies are concerned, a 2yr old tyre has had it's life & plenty of car tyres are worn out after 2yrs anyway which is why they are not really taking your claim very seriously.

I don't think you will get anywhere here, its fair to say that tyres that have very little use & not shielded from the sun will deteriorate with time & your best outcome would probably be them supplying you a cheap poor quailty replacement which you don't really want.

The tyres on my 2010 Lunar developed cracks within the tread pattern last summer , they were cheap and cheerful Trailermax and had a date stamp of November 2009 ( the van was new in Jan 2010)
I replaced them with Bridgestone 8plys which were not that expensive at £60 each.
TBH I didn't have the time or inclination to chase up a claim for two cheap tyres and just replaced them with better quality brand

Now there`s a surprise, a friend of mine`s previous caravan [Coachman] went in for it`s 3rd service 2 months before due date as hols were booked only to be told it required new tyres. He mentioned that he had the van from new just under 3 years, dealer stated that the tyres were 5 years old. I checked the Dot date and yes 5 years old.

We had a Coachman Lazer twin axle we bought the van when it was 12 months old previous owner never took it on the road when first bought,it was sited. l noticed the tyre walls started to show cracking quite noticeably after 12 months ownership. l changed tyres for a well known manufacturer and kepted the van for another 18 months before changing for a new van. l cannot remember the makers of the previous tyres,

Do you not only get a 1 year warranty on new tyre regardless of amount of use??

Our caravan is 5 years old this year and on Monday it going in for a Service and we having a new set tyres put on as well....

Thanks for your replies.

Coachman were not interested and after several months passed me onto the tyre suppliers.

I cannot understand how the suppliers are quibing for the sake of supplying two new tyres at cost price, I will replace the other side for peace of mind as well.

The tyres were made the same year as the caravan.

It will be interesting to read what they have to say about not having my tyre as it is my property and not theirs to dispose of without talking to me first. The cynic in me is now very inquisitive as to why they no longer have the tyre.

I will post further in the next few days.
