Whilst we loved camping with the tent, making it more comfortable was directly related to pitching/striking time. This always seemed to take ages and was awful in the rain. There was always the anxiety of what the weather would be doing at these points. The last straw in yearning for a caravan for OH was really the 5 or so inches of snow though...
got my tin top last year (june) after a interesting holiday at woolacombe bay with high winds and one ruined tent (brand new first trip out) it has been a good investment .
had a few problems but all of them have been solved thanks to the members on here .
We are still waiting for the caravan, build date 16 April, pick up 3 May.
Decision mostly due to a couple of very cold/wet afternoons spent waiting for the pub to open...one in June last year..
But also we would like to be able to get away all year round.
Our last trip in the tent will be at the end of this month and I am looking forward to it, but I am still concerned I will miss the space of the tent.
------------- Yes, the car is bigger than the 'van.
We have never owned a tent - went straight in feet first and bought an old caravan to see if we liked it. That was 9 years ago. Kept it for a few years and then upgraded. Have had, and intend to have, lots of great holidays in our tin tent. I just love being able to take my second home on wheels with me, stop off on the way if need be (or if we just fancy a break), set up the van and pop the kettle on....bliss.
This forum has been very useful - there is always someone on here who has been there, done that and bought the T shirt. Invaluable advice.
Yeah we've bought an old caravan (1990 Swift Conqueror 520) We love camping, but after last years pretty constant rain, there's only so many times you can cope with putting up/taking down a tent in the rain and trying to dry it!!
But I'm still keeping the Bell Tent (not ready to give up that yet)
But we've had a couple of outings in the van (photos to follow) and loved it, as well as fixing the faults and figuring it out as we go along.
We have just traded in our folding camper for a Swift Charisma 555. We started off with tents then moved to the luxury of the folding camper - proper beds, toilet etc were fantastic. I go fly fishing with a ladies club and we have quite a few "away" trips lined up this year. There is no way I could put the Crusader up on my own so it seemed like a good time to change to a caravan. My husband doesnt drive so I do the towing and this means that I will be able to get away even when he is working.
We are hoping to get away this weekend so I have been frantically reading all the caravan threads. Its great to hear about others starting off too.
We binned the tent 3 years ago and have never looked back. I hated camping and wasn't expecting the van to be much better but I was wrong and have been completely converted
Hi
We are new also. We are keeping our tent for when we decide to go somewhere different and when the weather is warmer! Our caravan is being sited on a permanent pitch in mid Wales so if we fancy going down south for a change we will use the tent. We decided to buy a caravan because I really can't stand the cold and the last couple of times we went camping it was freezing. We do like camping but I think we will like the caravan more. Also, if friends and family decide they want to come and spend some time with us, they can borrow our tent and pitch it in a field near to us.
We are newbies too. Our son is disabled and getting bigger ( 15 next birthday) and found it increasingly difficult getting him onto the airbed and into his sleeping bag, plus the tent was on its last legs. Decision, decision - to buy a new tent or a caravan - the caravan won - so we bought a Coachman Amara 570/6 - and went away in it over easter for the first time. Our son is due to have surgery next month so not sure when we will get out in it again. Hopefully in the kids summer holidays I may take them away for a week somewhere. Roll on summer!!
Yes I am another newbie to caravaning. I was feed up in my trailer tent due to the Great British weather and my aging process. I finaly bought one big enought for me, my two teenage children and our dog.
Just come back from our first time in it it was fab, warm, dry and comfey,
I will still be camping as I am a Cub leader and help at Scout and Explorer camps and are walking the Great Glen way this summer camping each night. I wanted a bit of comfort for my family holidays with my two kids after Scout camps.
