If you have a 12v socket already in the van(not sure if you do) why not use it as it will be fused already

You could wire direct from the battery it's straight forward but I would include an inline fuse close to the battery I am going to fit a cigar socket in our van the fuse box is under the seat so I will take a feed off that at the moment I use a cigar socket with a wire and plug that fits the two pin socket but its not the best solution

Not being very good with electricity but I thought a battery when fully charged is 14 or so volts how does this relate to 12 volt appliances ? brings me back to my first point should I use a voltage regulator?

Michael.
If you are using something which requires a stable 12 volt supply you can plug a stabiliser into the socket I use this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390425107919?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 for charging the laptop and a 12v tv
If you are using mains in your van i would recommend one of these, it just plugs into a mains socket and then you can plug any of your car type chargers into it
It also enables you to use your chargers in the house if needed. £9.99 from maplins.
I know its not a built in but its a useful option for anyone thats interested.
As well is two words!

As phil points out close to the battery is important for the fuse as it is protecting the cable to the socket not whatever is plugged into the socket.
Any '12 volt' device intended to be plugged into a cigar socket should be designed to operate with a voltage from 12 to around 14.5v. No separate voltage regulator is required.
if fitting straight from battery do not put the fuse in the battery box when I had mine service th service guy removed it and put it just out side the box said if it blew and caused a spark it could ignite the gas give of the battery when charging.
