Can anyone please help me with an argument with my father in law.

Am I right in thinking that the maximum technical permissable laden mass - the mass in running order = Payload?

That's right - the difference in the unladen and maximum laden weights is your payload figure.

except in post 2011 vans where the MIRO figure includes such things as gas bottles, water in tanks etc. & a separate figure is quoted for the actual payload
But the old principle still applies, the total payload is the difference between the MIRO & the MTPLM

This doesn't apply to Freedom Caravans, who do not include gas/water/battery within the MIRO and also consider fridges, blinds, bathroom equipment, hot water and heating system to be 'accessories', which eat into the 100kg payload.
