I now seal the the Aquaroll hole that the pump goes in with extra cling-film to prevent another earwig / insect incident!! Definitely dont want to go there again.

That's a good idea.

It is more likely the earwig crawled into your pick up hose while it was not connected to the caravan. The end in the aqua roll, either sunmersible pump or internal pump type, has a strainer on the end to stop bits getting into the system.
Why have a seperate bottle for drinking? filled from the same tap as the aqua roll is filled from? Is the aqua roll not just a big bottle?

I think the point is Andy, the water from the site tap maybe the same as in a bottle used for drinking but,if you have not sterilized the system in the van thats where the site water becomes contaminated..

So give it a clean once or twice a year and save boot leather walking to the tap with your little bottle. "Simples".

We drink from our system but sterilise it before every trip. I believe it only takes remaining water in the system a week or two to go stagnant so it's not worth the risk. Our current van has an on board tank which is handy in the winter but the system therefore takes a little longer to clean.

We have our first caravan with a crystal water filter and to be honest I am thinking its a waste of money our old van didn't have a filter and we sterilised the system before every trip drank the water and never had a problem. So we are going to carry on with that I think it's the cleanest way don't even fancy the water going through a filter that's been in the van a few weeks. So if we take the filter insides out and put it back en empty will the system work ok

I thought I would come back to this as I recently did a bit more digging and the answer is if you brush your teeth, wash eating implements or clean fruit, salad or vegetables in your caravan water without boiling it first you should sterilise you caravans water system every 28 days.

Stationary water deteriorates like this:

After 1 day    Water will lose its Oxygen and absorb Carbon Dioxide
After 7 days   Water will become stale and taste acidic
After 14 days Water is unfit for human consumption
After 28 days Water will start to develop bacteria

flushing the system through with clean water dilutes the bacteria that have developed in your water system over 28 days but doesn't eradicate them.

The bacteria develop even if you empty your system as there will always be deposits of water left behind unless your pipework is thoroughly dried.

Surely that must be true whether a water filter system is fitted or not?
With a filter in place the filter system only filters the water coming into the pipes of a caravans water system. Any filtered water left in the pipes for 28 days must suffer the same fate as unfiltered water unless that system is completely sterile and sealed from the outside world to stop and bacteria from getting in. I doubt they are or am I missing something?
That would mean the filter is only good for catching (and the easy removal of) debris you wouldn't want lodged in your caravans water system.
