Bit of a strange one.
I have a hyundai i40 tourer, leased from new and yesterday went in for 20K service.
When I recieved the car 12 months ago the tyre pressure were at 40 (only found this out after a puncture)
After my first proper trip in the new caravan i thought we would have the need to increase the pressure in the back wheel so increased to 45 (To be honest only guess work)
After looking at the tyre specifiaction for the car it stated that the tyre pressure should be 33 and 35 in the back whilst towing.
This seems extremely low to me especially when they were preinflated to 40 when I collected the car.
have discussed with Hyundai and they still claim 33 and 35 when towing. Tyres are special tyres for low friction and better fuel consumption appaerently
what are other peoples thoughts on this matter
Some people get confused regarding tyre pressures thinking that the bigger the tyre the more pressure you need but actually it's the opposite way round. A small trailer tyre will probably need around 50-60 psi. whereas a huge tractor tyre will only require about 15 psi. The calculatuion is based on pounds per 'SQUARE INCH' and there are more square inches in volume in the larger tyre than the smaller one thus the small tyre needing the extra pressure because the are less square inches in volume. So judging by the comments of Hyundai, their advice on the tyre pressures for your vehicle I would consider is accurate and correct. Also, have a look at the tyre wall and see what the maximum pressure allowed is as this will also give you a guide as to the correct tyre pressures.
tango55 I don't think your analogy works.
If you consider LGV tyres range from about 17.5in to 22in and pressures from 70psi to over 100psi
Every tyre has its own range based on usage and construction.
