well as newbies we have purchased a caravan private said it was showroom immaculate condition and ready to drive away for a holiday just need to add food and clothes. to cut long story short. was in caravan she hadn't put the legs down on the caravan and it started moving. then I was left to check it but I wasn't keen with it not being stable, checked the back for damp and didn't check the front. she advertised with everything but my mind went blank what to check for...was no battery no electric hook up and found damp when we got it home ;( took it to a repair place said not worth the cost its rotten the wall isn't even attached to the floor !!!! devastated isn't the word!

Moral of the story is to give the van the once over before you buy it. No comfort for you but a warning to the rest of us.

Have you got any DIY skills? Just because a caravan repair shop says it's not worth the costs doesn't been it can't be done. 90% of the repair costs are labour so if you have time and can swing a hammer then it's not the end of the world.

Caravan construction is very simple and there's plenty of advice on here.

If you can negotiate to return/refund then that would be good but if it's not possible then don't despair.

I know what i'd do,but a public forum is no the place to say it.

You've been ripped off, It's as simple as that. Either do something about it or take it on the chin.

I would try and chase the seller for a refund  before trying to do any repairs was it advertised as sold as seen in the add you mentioned

" showroom immaculate condition and ready to drive away for a holiday just need to add food and clothes"

If this was in the add then clearly false advertising try citizens advice or a lawyer to see where you stand.  A lawyers letter or a summons to a small claims court can have a major impact on peoples attitude. I would take no notice of her saying she has taken advice probably asked a family member of their opinion.

Did you get a receipt for the van and did it or did it not say sold as seen this may have some bearing on the matter.

Let us know how things go

Good luck

Have you got legal cover with your house insurance, if so give them a call. It costs nothing and worth a try. Personally I would do everything possible to get my money back. How can people be so dishonest and cruel.
If I couldn't get my money back I would name and shame her!
Good luck!

Really sorry but I am no where near you to be able to provide hands on help.

Why not start a new post on "Caravans Repairs" section with some pictures and I am sure everyone will chip in and give some online advice even if it has to be step by step. If you know a joiner or someone that is handy at DIY this also may be a way to go.

don't know how you stand on the legal front but i think i'd be pushing for a refund via the small claims courts if the seller won't play ball or at least looking into it

i don't think the ' sold as seen' ploy she has tried would stand up in court, she has sold an item which is not fit for purpose, ie the damp damage and the lack of items such as a battery etc, coupled to that she has also mis-represented the condition of the 'van in her advert

yes it's a hard lesson to learn but i'm sure you'd have a claim against her,  just depends how far and how hard you want to push for a refund

having said that, i guess, you'd have to weigh up the cost of and time taken to pursue a case through the courts against the price you paid for the 'van, would the ends justify the means ?

no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far

I once bought a Ford escort van advertised as in good condition for the year, was getting dark when I finally found the blokes house,so after having a look around it I left a deposit and planned to return the day after.Well it turned out to be a puppy

The blokes wife told me to whistle and I wasn't getting my deposit back,to cut a long story short I took them to small claims court and because they had misrepresented the van on the add I was awarded my money back with costs and the bloke had a CCJ against him

hi .. we experienced the same thing purchased our van 2 months ago . we new absolutely nothing really about caravans at the time  and were planning to live in it for a while ..  seen the advert was advertised as no damp issues although with ours being an older van we were expecting probably some issues with damp .. he told us everything was in perfect working order .. when we went to view the van it was cold snowing and inside the van you couldnt see the front seats as he had piled all the awning etc ontop of them ..  to say he had the gift of the gab and seen us coming was an understatement and probably our biggest mistake was telling him we were novices although we did say we were going to live in it ..  anyhows long story short we bought the van turns out the front of the van has had some serious issues with i wouldnt say damp i would say more like a river running through it ..  the water heater didnt work the toilet fresh water flooded the back end of the van . the tap to the kitchen sink was leaking and the fridge and fire dont work ..   we paid 1600 pound for it all of our money we had .. and after living in rented houses all our married life we were dead chuffed when we bought it that we now owned something that nobody could just take of us ..   we are however now living in it weve sorted the water heater out and the toilet .. still in the process of trying to sort the front end out although i dont think were ever going to really be able to stop it all together  the fridge  and fire are next  .. i no this isnt really going to help you much but i just wanted you to no your not alone there are some horrible nasty people out there that just see pound signs in front of there eyes and dont think about the consiquences they have on other people ..  it broke my heart to think another human being could do this to us .. but 1 good thing has come out of this weve learnt alot over the last couple of months and were very grateful to all the people on this site that have replied to our questions and helped us along the way   good luck to you and dont let a few nasty people put you of  .... michelle
