Already decided I want a Geist if we take to this caravanning lark next time round, but we'd need a bigger towcar. See how we go with the van we just bought and change a few years down the line maybe.

Before we changed to a motorhome we had four UK made caravans from new over a 22 year period which were use quite extensively and never had a serious problem with any of them so personally I have no reason to complain. Did once consider a Hymer but in the end went for a UK van which we felt suited our needs better and did not regret that decision. At the end of the day you pays your money, etc.

When we bought our first caravan 5 years ago we had no experience of caravans at all so we visited lots of dealers and a couple of caravan shows and quickly realised we much preferred the look and feel of German vans, so we bought a Burstner. German vans are very solidly built but generally lack all the bells and whistles like a microwave, full size oven or built-in sound system, but we didn't feel the need for them then, and still don't. However I'm aware that we are vastly outnumbered and some people even think we're a bit odd. Especially as our upholstery is blue rather than beige!! However, having read some of the horror stories on this forum about problems that seem to occur frequently in English caravans I think we made the right decision, although no doubt German vans have their problems too. You just don't seem to hear about them very often.

You can't beat a German van. And ours has all the bells and whistles you could want - including underfloor heating, full cooker, fridge etc. Saw a fab Dethleffs today at Lowdhams, Nottingham. Just need the winning lottery ticket. Island bed, beautiful upholstery etc. Quality is fantastic in these German vans.

When we bought our first van 18 months ago, I did my homework then went out to look at both UK and German. German stood out with regards to better interiors and just felt more solid. We couldn't afford a new van, so we're looking at quite a few years old. With the ultimate. Cans the spec/modern interior just didn't exist in a 2002/4 van but in a German one they were like today's UK vans. So we bought a 2002 Burstner. Wouldn't swap it for the world. Well, possibly one the same but fixed double bed and fixed full size bunks..... Just got fixed full size bunks at the moment.
So German it is!
I know many don't like them, but each to their own :)

It's nice to hear of others who prefer foreign vans, I have never quite understood why anybody would want a brass effect table lamp in a van I don't necessarily want to be different but uk models always seem a bit flimsy and feel like the might break at any moment

From what I have read on the quality of our caravan building you could be right.

I wholly agree and looking at the later Coachman Amara 450 models (2002 onwards) I still prefer our 1999 model in terms of practical layout, cupboard handles, lockers and upholstery etc. plus the newer British caravans in my personal view are getting to look more like offices rather than a home which seem to be downsizing from a 5 star to 3 star luxury.

I totally agree, if there is very few of them about then you wont get many reported faults so they must be good.
Just like the Trabant car, they must be good to, dont hear any complaints about them either.

We had a Geist caravan after having several British vans, was really pleased with it, we now have a French build motorhome on an Italian chassis, which so far has been ok, build quality not as good as our German van though

Yeah you must be right german vans are great, Just look at all the post about poor uk built vans on here that are leaking then look at all the post on here with german vans that are stolen Nice vans if you can hang on to them. Hymer and Geist that is......You can send the rest back for me
My old boss bought a Hobby van in 2006 ?? brand new direct from Germany with a stunning stippled sidewalls a swish blue interior and not a brass lamp in sight, he kept it on a permant pitch in north wales for 2 years then got rid.....why ??? because it literally fell apart, the windows fell out the kitchen fell apart and so did the bed furniture & that was just a few items.
As with everthing you get what you pay for and for that reason i bought a Coachman, i would have a hymer or giest but the rest no thankyou

We've just had our first trip in our Knaus Starclass 470. We changed from a pretty basic Bailey 470/4 so there are quite a few more bells and whistles on the Knaus than we are used to but if you ignore all that it's a solid piece of kit and I'm impressed.
I do have a few niggles though. There's far too much storage space which makes it very hard not to overload. The bits that attracted me in the first place turned out to be the bits that irritate me. Most significant is the fact that the fridge is behind a door so we have to rely on the door catch rather than the travelling lock on the fridge. Fridge contents everywhere :(
I'm not overly impressed with the kitchen storage either. Too many shelves and not much flexibility in them. Storage really needed a bit more thought. The bed frame is amazing but the legs need to have a system to hold them in place better when not in use.
I think if you are tall then it's well worth thinking about a german van. My 6ft4 OH has found this a very relaxing trip as he can stand up straight and doesn't feel cramped. We haven't found anything as good on the UK market so far.
However overall I'm impressed. We went for this because quite frankly we were scared to invest in British with all the reports of damp in virtually new vans. It needs tweaking here and there but I don't think we will regret the purchase.

Never had build quality issues with any of our many British 'vans ... German vans may well be better built but we don't like the look of them or some missing pieces of desirable (to us) equipment. Some people may be willing to sacrifice looks for build quality, but we are shallow and prefer a van that is easy on the eye (again to us).
