Couldn't go away this weekend, as i was working, but took the caravan out for th first time. Never towed before so a bit scary, but wanted to do it before we go away for the weekend next week.

Been sorting out the caravan this weekend and we are both very excited and looking forward to our night away.

The main purpose is to put up the awning and make sure everything is OK with the van.

One question, do you keep the gas bottle in the Front locker or in th van. I know it should be disconnected, but note sure if to store it in the van or leave it in the front locker.

When I took the van out yesterday, I left the gas bottle in the front locker and it seemed to tow OK, but as never towed before have nothing to compare it to.

What does everyone else do

we leave our gas bottle in place(but disconnected),it's got it's own proper little spot with a safety strap so why not use it.

BTW, have fun with your new van

you need to check the noseweight of your caravan as this must not exceed the allowed noseweight (download on the car towbar) allowance of your car.( legal requirement)

then you can work out if you need to remove the gas bottles & everything else from the front locker,But normally the bottles stay in the front locker

I carry two bottles in my front locker at all times they are strapped nice and tight, I turn the gas off but leave the regulator attached to which ever bottle I am using at the time.

I would be a bit reserved to have a gas bottle inside the van if it was to start rolling about it could do a fair bit of damage. Also god forbid but if the worst happened the first thing fire service would do would to be looking for the bottle in the front locker and not in the van itself.

Apart from that Well-done on the first trip and enjoy a few trips under your belt and you will soon be giving advice on the forum like an old hand.

As 'old chap' says above, please check the nose weight of your van and then you can work out if you need to remove the gas bottles or not.

Our first Bailey was overweight with just one bottle in the front locker. We had no choice, but to strap it in the van when towing. (Real Pain)

Our new Bailey can just handle one 'lightweight' bottle in the front locker before we reach the nose weight limit. It now stays in the locker, but gets turned off when not in use or when towing.

Yes it's OK as long as it is not going to roll around but you will have to have a gas sticker diplayed on the boot(or rear window) of yout car

We turn our gas off but leave it connected, never had any problems. The gas locker is ventilated. Keep it in the locker, that's what it is made for.

Hi,

Just been away for my First weekend in the Caravan,Checked the Noseweight and it was over by 7kg,Removed the gas Bottle and it was Smack on, I put mine over the Axle in the Van,It had moved when I opened the Van,The bottle had moved around,Luckily, not causing any Damage,From now on I will be putting it in my Boot.

My brother,Has the Calor Gas Lite Bottles,He says they make a massive difference,So when my two run out, thats what I will be getting.

Do all of you guys carry a spare bottle for back up??

Cheers

The 7 kg will be lost with a calor lite bottle. Yes many do carry two in front.. I have two calor lites but my nose weight is 100 kg and we travel for 4 weeks on continent come August and you cant buy it there. Id be tempted to see what else you have in front locker and remove that leaving the gas bottle in there ...heaven forbid an accident but it would be far better travelling in the locker where its meant to be than the back of the car. I would say to anyone carrying it in the car it is absolutely foolish for reasons of A accident B possible leakage.

Yes I appreciate in any accident problems may occur but at least its not in the car with you eg behind rear seat passengers...At least there would be 6 8 feet gap between them if in locker.

Plus never carry one on its side If stored with contents in a horizontal mode then the gas could / would cover the relief valve and could leak. If you insist on transporting loose bottles in a car you should also make sure that the 'blanking' plastic screw is in place and not have the bottles left for more than two hours...Oh and obviously no smoking etc

The carriage of same is governed by The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 for further information you consult the websites of either Calor or flo or ??

This is what I do... Leave it in the locker and turn it off at the valve. I really couldn't disconnect it as it's a propane bottle, requiring a big spanner and usually a man! Neither of which I seem to have handy when I need them...
