Hi, I went to "Compare caravan insurance, you fill in your details and out pops a load of quotes.
Some say the Caravan Club offers the best deal (i've not found that true).
As for anti theft devices the minimum would be a towbar lock and a wheel clamp.
------------- I'd rather be fishing!!!!

Welcome to the Forum. As with all things, worth getting a few quotes, you will be surprised at the range.
Regarding security. What will be required will depend on the age, make and value of the caravan. Newer ones will then to require tracker and more security to get cover. For older, cheaper ones not all insurance companies will insist on security but you will get discounts for having it. Discounts will normally also apply for secure storage, having done a towing course and having stabiliser fitted and some others so worth checking these when you get quotes as it might make a difference to the initial prices quoted.
Thank you very much, never had a van worth insuring before ! Ill make sure to do my homework then and check out tracker prices - have either of you any advice on which tracker ? No doubt they are expensive - we've looked into storage and found either a gold or silver cassoa with space to store a twin axle
i have found caravan security a minefield over the years when reading the forums you know why.not to be rude if you buy cheap locks it is much easier to take.buy a good wheel clamp £ 100 it will last all your caravan years.and for insurance you may need a hitch lock too.some do some dont.ours has two wheel clamps at home and a hitch lock.i also keep it at home so i have ground anchors front and rear with heavy chains and locks.we have an alarm too.normally takes me 15 minutes to free it but i dont mind.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
If you have a twin axle and they specify a wheel lock they will expect you to have two. The al-ko ones are a pain to fit the second one.
The reason they give is that they can be stolen by letting the air out of the tyres on the axle with the clamp fitted so the wheels don't touch the ground and driving away on the single clear axle.
My insurance is with C&CC and they didn't insist on two but only gave discount for two so I only fitted one as I was on maximum discount already.
Just fit the security devices required by your insurance co. Its pointless paying out for a tracker unless required by insurance co. which it won't be unless 'van is new top of range. If the caravan is nicked you won't want it back, the tracker will help in the eventual recovery of the caravan so the insurance co. can recover some of it's losses.
The value of your caravan isn't important but if damage is caused by your caravan to a third party you need insurance so no matter how inexpensive your caravan is you need insurance.

This scenario is unlikely as liability has to be proved, unless you were say, pushing the detached caravan yourself & caused damage then you would not be liable. Ownership of caravan does not automaticaly make owner liable for any damaged caused, ie if set on fire or pushed down a hill by vandals causing damage to third party property. If caravan is attached to car it is covered by car insurance for third party risks but not damage to caravan.
So if the caravan is only worth a few £100s it ain't worth insuring.
When you ask for quotes they'll soon tell you what minimum security they require you to have. The more you have the longer it'll take the scum to pinch your van. When they pinched our first new one I went OTT with devices to make their life harder. Some still say they'll still get it if the want it but they'd have earned ours.
To fit our Al-Ko locks I always jacked the van up and we soon knew where the wheel needed to be to settle in the right lace to take the lock. We always hitched our caravan to a post so because it was captive the receiver was always in the wrong place to fit the lock but jacking it up didn't take long.
We also had leg locks & a hitch lock for our and were insured with Caravan Guard, on our old caravan which didn't have the Al-Ko hitch we also used to fit a small Barrel lock into the hole above the release trigger on the hitch, this little lock prevented the van being hitched as long as it was in place & was said to be undrillable.
