We are due to change our sons motorbility vehicle in september and I need to do research now! ( Bearing in mind the vehicle also needs to hold a large wheelchair)We currently have a ford galaxy 2.0l tdci with a noseweight of 90KG - we could have one of these again. however there is also a Vauxhall Antara 2.2l diesel with a noseweight of 80kg. Our caravan is a coachman amara 570/6 with a mtplm of 1585kg. The carvan noseweight when we checked it on the nose weight gauge was 95kg but we did move a few things round inside to get it to 90kg.
What I am trying to say is, is it better to rev the engine on a 2.0l car and get a higher noseweight or get a bigger engine with a lower noseweight? Confused!!!!
Ford Galaxy vs Vauxhall Antara? No contest, go for the Galaxy. I think you will find you can get a 2.2diesel Galaxy with about 190bhp, whats not to like?
Galaxy 2.2 diesel, if its outside the mobility range i believe you can pay the extra amount that's over the allowance, if your in a position to do so.
Good luck with your search,
I have an antara 163ps which tows my 1500kg Pegasus like a dream. However the boot is small compared to the Ford and you may struggle to fit a wheelchair in.
Thanks all! Just checked on motability website and the galaxy is no longer on! The ford Kuga now there MVP/SUV! Checked all other cars for noseweight and 85% weight and all of them (ford Kuga, BMW x1' Audi a3) were between 93% to 103% and the noseweight were only 80kg. Looks like I will be coming off motability and buying my own!!!
That's what we did as our Galaxy 2.2 didn't really have a good enough kerb weight etc for towing our big caravan. It's a shame as the motability is a great scheme, but when you tow or have a large family like us there are other factors to consider.
I hope you find something suitable to meet your needs
Hi just checked on motabilty website and the Galaxy 2.0ltr diesel Zetec advanced payment is £1795.00, with the titanium being £2995.00.
There are 91 cars with the MPV title, with a engine of 1.9 - 2.0 ltr.
We have the Antara and it would most certainly NOT carry a wheel chair in the boot too small, although would cope well with the van.
I know very little about the mobility allowance but if you do come of this scheme could you not look at personal leasing as an alternative this will give you fixed servicing, tax and MOT all for a fixed price. Not sure if the cash alternative to mobility will cover the vehicle type but it is always an option.
good luck
PS have you ever thought about a van type vehicle (Toyota ect) some of these look really good and should pull the van and give lots of space for the wheelchair.

Honda CRV 2.2 diesel ctdi will do it for you. I bought mine ex mot ability at auction so must be gettable for you. Weighs over 2 tonne so is suitable for your caravan.
