Or, to phrase it a bit more clearly, did you choose your caravan first then match your tow car to it, or did you stick with your existing car and only look at caravans that would match it?
We are changing both this year, and it'll have to be the car first because our Audi won't tow anything much heavier than the caravan we already have.
With our very first caravan we towed with the existing mk2 escort 1.6. Probably never gave much thought to weights etc as it was a company car. They are renowned as being capable of towing anything at high speed.
When we came back to caravanning we were in a position to buy a caravan then buy a car capable of towing it.
Never gave it a thought years ago,but then was ignorant to the fact.First van i bought was a very heavy 4 berth, cant remember what it was.I pulled it with a fiat uno 998cc and burnt out the clutch after about 50 miles...they were the days.
Never gave it any thought I am a certified Land Rover nut and have a Defender 110 and Range Rover P38 both capable of a max tow weight of 3.5 ton not a 85% match but they are both weighing in just short or a couple of ton each any way so no worries.
TBH, first van was matched by the wallet, and what the current car could tow.
When I changed cars, I got one that could tow more, then got bigger van, then changed car, then got bigger van (you see where this is going )
Cant get any bigger towcar now, so lets see what the wife wants to buy this time
We bought a towcar that would tow the heaviest 'van we were likely to chose, after looking at mtplm figures for possible contenders.
Just as well we did it that way round, as the 'van we have now is towards the upper end of our mtplm range and was not even being considered 'till Mel saw one...
We bought what we could tow with Dh's leave car that he has through work. We would now like to replace my Audi A2 with a,seven seat vehicle and towing will be a consideration.
As we hadn't any intention of buying a van, being avid tenters, we went to to the NEC Spring show just for a day out. We were wandering round the vans before heading over to the tent display when a particular van just grabbed us. We were told our car would only tow the smallest of vans, so we decided if we were going to have to buy a new car to tow we may as well get a van that ticked all the boxes, not just most. So we had a very pleasant day choosing the van knowing there was no weight restriction.
I am lucky enough to be able to walk to work and into town so have quite a small car that sits on the drive 95% of the time. My OH now has my fuel efficient little car and the big towcar stays on the drive unless towing.
------------- Started with a motorbike and tent.......my gallery, my life.
We had a ford focus when we bought our caravan witch on paper should have towed it but when we picked it up hubby wasn't happy so we bought a ford maverick which was much better but now tow with a ford mondeo st he is more than happy tows like a dream.

We have the 110 anyway, so could've bought pretty much anything...
We bought an Xplore 302, tow match about 30%!
------------- Yes, the car is bigger than the 'van.
We got our first caravan (1993 Fleetwood Colchester) that our A4 avant would tow, 1300kg max, just to see if we liked caravanning, after 7 month upgraded my car a 106 to a freelander, then it took another 18 month to find a bigger van that we liked. Upgraded both again since then.
On our first go, when we decided to get a caravan I knew little about it. Decided to get quite a big car so that options were plenty. We were given some good advice from Swindon Caravans and purchased a Vauxhall Omega estate 2.5 V6. It could pull everything we looked at, and coped easily with the Bailey Pageant Auvergne we picked up as our first van.
Awsome first tow car, arguably still the best tug we've ever had. For anyone knowing the hill out of Weymouth, this car would accelerate up this hill in third gear.
Still miss it now, but sadly come the end it suffered with the usual high mileage Vauxhall running gear issues and was scrapped when the costs of repairing the heating system outwayed considerably the value of he car. It was a real waste because the lovely V6 engine probably hadn't been completely run in. Still purred like a kitten.
