We picked up our brand new at the weekend. Last night we were in it doing the usual stuff, checking out all the bits and pieces and I checked out the hob and it worked fine. I turned off the gas and put the glass lid down and moved on to something else. Within a few minutes there was an explosion as the glass hob cover returned back to its original molecular state which was distributed far and wide. Obviously I had not turned off the hob, merely turned it to low.
It took ages to clean up every minuscule fragment without scratching the hob or work tops. I hope soon to be allowed out of the kennel where I spent the night as the dog was unhappy about me encroaching on his space! On the plus side, the wife did not like the new plain glass lid so it is being replaced by the chincilla version this week. Bet I don't do that again!
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Oh no!!! So was this caused by it still being hot? This is probably something I would do! I noticed when igniting my oven at the weekend that the hobs still try to ignite too. Should I keep my glass lid up too then?? So sorry to hear that. Just shows how easy it is for these little errors to be made.

not quite sure I understand from what you said it was still lit with the lid down ???
That shouldnt happen as you pull the lid down it should shut off the flame
There are always warnings not to to put the lid down when the hob is still hot (or on !), but I always thought it would just crack - not explode like you describe !
Glad there weren't any injuries (apart from your pride)
I bet it's not cheap to replace. Is anything cheap to replace in a caravan ???
It was totally my fault. I thought that I had turned the two front burners off. Propane burns with very little colour and the van door was open and there was sunlight (I know... how freakish) shining through and because I couldn't see flame I thought that the rings were off but I had put them on low. I don't think that the glass would have exploded had the hob just been hot because I think that it could withstand it quite well, but with direct flame it is another story!
OH was only just saying how she needed to come up with a plan to stop the clear glass lid getting scratched. TBH, blowing up the lid and replacing it with a £75 chincilla glas version was not top of my list of suggestions. Mind you, after this little episode she had a few suggestions of her own!
I don't know. On my domestic cooker I have a valve that shuts off the gas when the lid is lowered but I can't see anything like that on the caravan hob. Our 2008 Compass Rallye certainly didn't have a cut-off.
all the vans we have had have had it ? must be worth asking the dealer cos if it does have one then its faulty and you would be able to claim against the warranty
I have had a look and can see nothing at all. I have gone through the Thetford/Spinflo user guide and installation instructions and there is no mention of a gas cut-off either in text or diagram, so I guess the answer is that it does not have anything like a safety cut-out.
