I used to use Navmii (same company, probably the same satnav system) on my phone after TomTom mobile stopped support for non apple phones. It worked quite well, in fact better than TomTom mobile.
When I got aa android phone it came with Google sat nav which apart from the synthesized voice is pretty good
These apps work well, as they are more up to data than the traditional units you can buy, just be careful you don't exceed your data allowance, especially when traveling abroad!
Navfree is a pretty good app. It has the option of setting a truck route to avoid narrow roads and low bridges so is pretty good for towing. It also stores the maps on the sd card rather than downloading them as it goes so doesn't use chunks of your data allowance like Google.
Had it on phone a few years now and when hubby's Tom Tom mucks up its always found the place and got us there. To dab using lots of data I do turn of on long sections of motorway or areas we now or that are well signed and never had a problem with it even when I had quite limited usedg
