hi all
not my day today. ive had the caravan hooked up to the mains for a few days now, everything seems to be ok till about 2 hrs ago.was sat down looking at my laptop when i herd a ping and a burning smell from the charger {pcu 1250 powermaster} checked all the fuses which are all ok and the one on the battery compartment. so in a nut shell the 2 side lights think they are 12v are working.all sockets are working. ceiling and bathroom lights are not working. replace the halogen bulbs still not working. the 12v master volt meter is no working. the leisure battery is only a few weeks old so its not that. theres no hum coming from the charger as there was b4. so people an ideas please would be helpfull as we want to go in the van nextweek end.
cheers all
baileydave......
On finding my built in charger not functioning - I disconnected and sealed the mains input to it and the 12volt outlet before wiring in a halfords automatic battery charger I am running it successfully directly attached to the battery and also plugged into an adjacent caravan 240v socket. After a short test period I intend to install it permanently.
------------- If if it aren't totally broken its probably best left alone.

We have a 2006 470/4 and the charger packed up last autumn although we very rarely use ehu when away we did leave the van plugged in at home
I took the charger apart and found two capacitors burned out I decided to go the car battery charger route and just connect it via the 12v socket over the work top it's has been fine so far I think replacement chargers are about £90 and they are straight forward to fit

hi phil
thanks for that info.my old man just said the very same thing.funny thing is the 240 lights are all working now its baffled me. the battery meter is in the yellow now which was in the green this morning so im assuming the charger part of the unit has blown which tripped everything out.there must be a delay befor the unit switches back on again.im woundering if the charger was faulty and blew m assuming it would trip out the electrics?
Hi bailey Dave
Depending on the year of your van our lights are all 12v I know all series 5 rangers are the same
When I looked inside the charger you could see where it had been getting hot the circuit board was quite discoloured

hi phil
sorry to say mine has 2 12v side lights and the main ceiling and bathroom lights are 240
well just an update i changed all the fuses and bulbs for new ones and its all back on but sadly its not charging the battery.ive seen reports that r48 diode is the possible cause so now i need either a new charger or buy a stad alone charge
if any one can help as im struggling to find a replacment. ive taken out the whole box{electric/charger} main board. the charger is i think a black box but were to get a replacment from.
The placement of the consumer unit/charger housing doesn't lend itself to decent ventilation on these in my opinion. I've fitted a partition a short distance in front of the housing plus a vent grill in the seat box to ensure proper air flow around the unit.
As for a replacement, either retrofit an off-the-shelf charger, or you can get the original from Baileys parts direct.
