Traffic on the A19 near Middlesbrough was brought to a standstill when a caravan was blown into a lorry on the A19 just before noon today (Friday 24th).
The accident resulted in debris being strewn across three lanes of the road and caused lengthy delays on the southbound carriageway.
A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: “It appears the caravan has become unhitched from the vehicle towing it then hit a commercial vehicle which has smashed it to pieces.”
No one is believed to have been hurt in the accident.
The southbound carriageway was closed at the A174 Parkway junction for a short time.
The road was partially re-opened at around 1pm and traffic remained slow for a few hours while carriageway was cleared.
I hope they are alright but it was a very windy day how does he go about on his insurance because it says it has unhitched itself from the vehicle i always fasten the safely chain around the towbar and through the pig ring that is attached to the bracket ...

If the caravan comes unhitched on the road then you are insured for third party claims same as if anything else detached itself from car, ie roofbox, bikes or whatever. Theres no safety chain on a caravan just a breakaway cable which yanks on handbrake before it breaks.
If caravan is properly hitched to ball it cannot become detached. If owner drove off without it seated down on ball it seems odd that he managed to get out along a fast road before it came off.
Probably not. If caravan was off the ball with hitch on ground but still secured to car with strong chain or cable it would make things worse, I would think.
I think the real answer is to do things properly. A pre-flight check, and an examination of the parts holding everything together. We should all do this prior to departure.

Or a device to stop the hitch lifting off the ball?
There is a device to stop the hitch lifting off the ball, its called the hitch. If its on it can't come off. For it to come off it can't be on, ie its sitting on top of ball with handle down. Nothing is idiot proof. But as pointed out the caravan probably did not come off.
