My parent's caravan developed a nasty niff - a bit like rotten eggs. It turned out to be the leisure battery sizzling, due to a fault with the charger system.

That looks very interesting captain kipper !! Will defo use this, and will use it in my grooming shop..thanks hadn't seen this before xx
Quite a few caravaners use it to freshen the van up after getting it out of storage.
Can remove quite a few bad odours
Similar to ones used for car aircon cleaning.
We use frabreeze everytime we put the van in storage and its very fresh when we take it out though,i wouldnt use it when stored in winter as its said to cause mould.
Visited the van tonight, after pouring bleach down drains yesterday, it may be wishful thinking, the smell was still there, but it seamed not so strong, and it cleared very quickly, fingers crossed, will go back tomorrow and repeat the bleach...

It does sound as if it is your drains. Have you back flushed from the outside as I suggested. You will be amazed what comes back up into the shower and sinks!!!!
With reference to cleaning the drainage pipes you could put a length of flexible waste pipe over both outlets so the water goes down one then loops back up into the other and treat with scented Zoflora disinfectant and warm water and leave over night. The disinfectant will clean the pipes and leave a refreshing smell and if you have your wastemaster in the caravan clean the interior of that too. Disinfectant is better than bleach as like Jeff rightly said you have to be cautious regarding using bleach. This method of cleaning worked for us and we do it once annually now to keep any bad smells at bay.
My sis's caravan had a nasty smell when we first went away. We tried everything as above mentioned. However, she had one of those tip up sinks which didn't seem to be draining properly. Took it off and you wouldn't believe what was down the back, including soap and soap dish, gobs of hair, etc... it was absolutely disgusting and took a lot of cleaning and flushing before it smelt fresh again.
This was a caravan we had been assured had had a full clean carried out before she brought it home. Needless to say we purified the water system with puriclean afterwards, and just filled the kettle for water until it was done.
Lol...too late jeff, bleach went down the drain, before I saw your post !!! Will flush it well out tonight ..thanks for that tip tango, will look into that, someone suggested to backfill with hose, unfortunately we can't do that as no water supplie where we store caravan :( .. All see how it is tonight
