My side lights and tail lights on my caravan failed on a return trip home home. on examining my car the side lights and rear lights on that had also blown. I fixed the fuse on the car and it is now working. How do I sort the lights on the caravan or will replacing the fuse in the car sort it out? what causes this is it a faulty connection, a blown bulb(or more than one?) or water ingress? any help would be useful. My last attempt to change a bulb that had blown(the back rear high tail light) resulted in replacing the whole light fitting as the old one disintegrated on removal and has never worked since. any advice welcome. thanks
Sounds as if some thing is going to earth.Might be a few things like water in the caravan plug, bad earth in caravan plug.water in rear light cluster just to name a few..

will check out plug and see if that helps.would it be the grey or black that is the likely culprit.according to the wiring diagram the side and tail lights are on both the grey and black plug.in that case would I be looking at a whole new twin socket fitting ? certainly it has been very wet over the last few days although I always keep a cover over the hitch and sockets.but water ingress could be a possibility.either in the lights themselves or the sockets That would be well outside my diy skills.will let you know when I try again ( and get another fuse handy for the car just in case!)
looks like the plug has rusted inside at the earth. now I have dismantled it I think I can replace it and hopefully sort the problem. If not it might be the bulbs. either way, the plug looked like it need replaced anyway. Thanks for help. Now how do I replace the light sockets? the ones at the rear look straightforward as they screw off. the front lights however don't. are they like car lights that you replace from behind. in this case from the front locker? sorry to keep asking questions. thanks in anticipation
If you have the twin socket assembly (12N & 12S) then it's only the 'black' plug and socket that operate the rear trailer lights. The 'grey' socket operates the 12 volt fridge and the onboard battery charger and I think it may possibly operate the rear fog lights (if fitted). I would examine the plug cable for any damage as well as it has been known for the cable to drag along the floor in transit and rub away the insulation down to the bare wires which would also cause fuses to blow. Access to the front marker light bulbs on my caravan are in the front locker and yes they retract from the back of the light and not from the front the same as the rear light cluster do.
Thanks for that,it was very useful, have ordered up new plugs 12N and 12S as they both look the worse for wear and will check cable. Will try and access lights to replace bulbs and hopefully problem solved. I love this site! thanks for all the help.
