Just spent 4 hours cleaning the new caravan (showroom shine). Had a lot of time to ponder life whilst doing it!
The front was caked in dead flies and took quite a few sprays to get off, all the while I'm thinking by the time we have towed to the next site this week-end it will be once again caked in flies, and I'd rather have it clean while I'm in it! So do I get my spray and cloths out while I'm there? Will I look like an anorak? And what if it's raining? Is it better to have a dry day at home and just do it?
The other problem is that the front of the van at storage is facing south west, so any flies I collect on the way home are well and truly baked after a few days of sun (what sun?). SO do I clean it when I get back as well?
That's just the front. Next problem is the storage site is a working farm, agriculture. It only takes a day before the van is covered in dust, a week and it looks like it'sbeen through the desert!
I started pondering whether to cover it but we are going away most week-ends after work on a Friday, is it worth covering it just for a week? We can get hitched and pulling away in half an hour at present.

Well if you look like an anorak then so do I! We pulled up on site on Friday night and after setting up everything, I got out my folding washing up bowl, filled it with hot soapy water and washed the flies off. We also left enough water in the hot water tank to do it again when we got back to storage. Nothing worse than baked on flies guts
Think we might get a trug thingy so we can give it a quick wash over whilst on site, for us that is easier than trying to do it when in storage and we can't fit it on drive to do at home. That Bobby Dazzler stuff is supposed to be quite good too isn't it? To stop stuff sticking as much?

Oh, good! We have been away 4 times since we got the van at Easter and I've never seen anyone do anything. The showroom shine works well, the van looks lovely. It also says it makes stuff easier to get off, so we shall see! I shall take some with me and clean the bugs off when we get there!

do it b4 you go then just spruce it back up when your settled on site, i see lots of people cleaning vans while on camp, its your pride & joy at the end of the day just do it, i would with mine but cant be bothered im lazy
Where we go regularly, there a really nice guy on there. His van is his pride and joy, he spends at least 2 hours on the weekends we have been there with a bottle of autoglym and a cloth removing every last bit of dirt from his van. It's 15 years old and sparkles in the sun like its new. He made my quick wipe down embarrassing
I do several diy maintenance jobs onsite. It's the only free time I get so it has to be done.
Last week onsite I saw many people washing caravans and cars and one guy was resealing his awning rail. If you want to do it, so be it. It's your holiday time after all.
We clean ours before we go then go over it on site just quickly the front and maybe a bit of the side.
Then carry enough water to just get the grime off the front again when we get home.
Leave the rest till we go again.
We get it out of storage and clean it, then when on site wash off any flies or mucky bits then same when we get home, its always lovely and clean, our pride and joy, OH is same with our cars, they are always pristine. I clean the inside after every trip whether its a 2 day or a 3 week trip and its left as new each time, J x

I shan't worry about doing it on site now. The great thing about the showroom shine is that you can do a bit at a time.
Showroom shine works better after the van has been washed. After you get a coating on things are easy to come off,.
hi ihave mine on a site but still clean it each week gets me away from oh but on my travels have seen many caravans with front covers is this the way forward
We do it before we go and we have just got a pump water bottle 80 lt with a soft brush on the end just pup and it gently sprays weighs very little so we can wash the caravan and transit on site easily when we get there only takes a few money's for a quick once over

It's nice to be important but its more important to be nice
I bring my van home a few days before we go away. Then spend a good few hours cleaning outside. The OH cleans the inside. Like others i do wipe the van down on site and yes may be considered an anorak :)
I first saw towing covers in France - thought they were a bit OTT until I walked past a caravan with one on and saw them close up - hardly a square inch that wasn't full of bug splats
I now know why they are used - in the heat of the continent and long driving distances it would be bliss to just remove the cover and be able to see out of the window.
I always use a front cover, its a simple solution and once its washed on return, it is put under a full cover until I use it again, at its annual service in May the engineer told me using the cover (since 2011 when the van was new) had reduced damp readings to 10% less than last year and less than new van in their yard
