Hi
Just been away in our old Elddis 1991 2 birth caravan, left our van this morning for about 3 hours,we returned to find the water pump buzzing away with no water in the barrel( it was full when we left)all the taps were off and it seems the water had been pumped into the caravan its self, as the carpet is now ringing wet, there is no sign of a leak at the water intake or at any of the taps.any ideas would be appreciated.
yep same here- whenever we leave the van, even if we are just nipping out for a paper or goodies we always turn the pump off-as above, check under seats and cupboards, you could even have a connection/join split somewhere. good luck gary
Kind of. Our pump kept running for around a second every minute. I thought there was a leak, but couldn't find one anywhere. When we got back, I had the caravan engineer have a look, and he confirmed there was no leak. He did strongly suspect the heater drain-down valve wasn't completely closed at the time, so was allowing just a tiny amount of water to drain straight out of the system.
We've had no further problems since, and nothing was replaced.
If the water pump keeps re-activating it means that the system is not effectively re-pressurising for some reason. This could be down to a slight leak, a rubber 'O' ring not sealing properly at the pump housing, a pressure relief valve not functioning correctly, a tap not turned off fully, a faulty pipe joint causing an air intake in the system. There are many reasons as to why a water system cannot pressurise and this can suddenly happen during the night whilst asleep or in the absence of the owners in the daytime therefore the advice is to ALWAYS switch off the pump when not in use for long periods which then you can deal with the problem effectively and not having to deal with a flood as well.
Another problem that can happen if you have a pressurized system is voltage drop, when the pump voltage drops its then not powerful enough to pressurize the system, so it will run at a reduced rate trying to pressurize the system.
Next time it happens dont touch anything and turn on your charger this will add the correct voltage then see if the problem stops.
If this solves the problem then your battery is not holding its charge or you have left something switched on that is draining it.
As your carpet is very wet you must of had a leak somewhere???
Thank you for you replies, yes you are of cause right, I should have turned off the pump, lesson learnt, however I do not think it is a pressurised system and I looked under the seats etc but they are all dry, I can not work out were the water is coming in, is it possible for pipes to tun under the floor ? all cupboards dry wardrobe dry its just the carpet that is soaking.
Found it, some dip stick has tried to seal the hot water tank with silicone, when it still leaked he concocted a method to run the leaking water down into the bathroom, this had become blocked and due to a faulty micro switch the pump stayed running so the water leaked under the carpet.
Glad you found out what it was. These things can and sometimes do drive you insane. Happy caravanning anyway when you are next out and enjoy. cheers gary
