Hi all, we're new to caravanning (but loving it), and have just returned from our second trip. The site was very gently sloping, so I towed the van onto the second of three steps of our Milenco triple level ramp.

I put the handbrake on, and as I was unhitching it from the car, it rolled of the ramp. Even though one side only move a few inches, it was momentarily terrifying.

I fully expected the handbrake to hold it steady on the ramp. I'm pretty confident the handbrake works, as the van was only serviced in March.

Have I missed out something important in the procedure? Any advice would be very gratefully received.

Thanks,

John.

Possible options would be to chock the other wheel and lower the steadies before uncoupling.

Firstly you need to chock the rear of the caravan wheel before un-hitching and if you have the yellow plastic levelling ramps then they should also come with a pair of compatible chocks too which interlock with each other. You pull up the caravan on to the ramp, check for level, chock rear of caravan wheel then finally release the car handbrake. The caravan will roll and settle into the ramp and chock which then is sound and secure and finally apply the caravan handbrake. Also the hitch damper slides in and out which operates the caravan brakes in transit but also has a reverse over-ride mechanism built in so the brakes don't apply when you reverse (pushes the shaft in). Therefore because of the design the handbrake will only fully operate when the hitch is pulled out so the best solution is to pull up the caravan onto the ramp rather than reverse which I previously mentioned.

This happened to me a while since. Ran it onto the ramp, levelled it,engaged the handbrake. When I un-hitched, the van always rolled off the ramp (always the same wheel).
When this happened a few times I decided to investigate the   breaking system and found that one of the break shoes was faulty on the offending wheel. The lining had become detached from one of the shoes rendering that wheel brake ineffective. Not saying this is your problem but the caravan should not roll once the handbrake is applied. Good luck.

You also need to pull the handbrake fully vertical, this prevents it rolling backwards.
