I bought a 30 years old van, and had several problems with it... but all were sorted out eventually.
The service engineer who came to sort it out replaced the flexible bits of gas pipe as they had perished, condemned the gas fire and I had that taken out and capped off. Fitted new gas taps inside the cupboard to the cooker and fridge. He also put the electrics right, put some proper electric points in and fitted an electric unit and a fridge, which it didn't have. It all cost about £400 (not including the fridge, I bought that separately) but it was money well spent. That was around 3 or four years ago now.
I eventually sorted the leaks and other bits and pieces out myself (with the help of a few good friends)!
Well I am delighted to report that our Lola, as I have named her, has passed her service with flying colours!
Just had to buy a couple of new tyres, engineer advised a smoke alarm which we would have fitted anyway and a couple of other incidentals which will amount to a tenner, if that.
Most importantly, no gas leaks!
I couldn't be happier. 30 years old and still going strong.
That's the van btw, not me! :P

Brilliant! It's worth it for piece of mind, isn't it?
Perhaps the engineer was originally detailing a worst case scenario, just in case that's what it turned out to be.
I think so, I did joke with him that he was expecting a chicken shed on wheels!
Even better hubby pulled up the carpet this weekend and a previous owner has reboarded it! Can't believe we have been so lucky, will be sad to see it go and haven't even started the revamp yet! :D
Have washed all curtains today as they are in fantastic condition, plain cream chenille... Not what I would have chosen but no point spending for spendings sake. We do need blackout lining in them though.
And the horrid old smell has all but gone now that the carpet is out. Happy days! Will post some pics of floor soon.
As an aside, husband has also sanded the rust off the chassis and applied hammerite, the wheels have also been sanded and sprayed burnt orange to match the trim on the exterior. She's looking better all the time. :D
