advancing age is catching up with us,so we are now thinking seriously about buying a caravan, not a new one,but an old starter van,im just wondering whether there are any caravan books about that would point us in the right direction?
down here there are lots of vans that stay on sites all the time, and this got us interested..i have started trawling the sites like gumtree, preloved and autotrader,so getting an idea for it,but honestly dont fancy much towing (how bad is that)but wouldnt mind too much cos we can get to local places pretty easily..anyone got any pointers for advice for a long time tenter?????

Such a big subject; hard to come up with a definitive answer, but a copy of Haynes' "The Caravan Manual" by John Wickersham might be a start. Don't pay for a new one, they're always about on car boot sales, eBay, Amazon etc.
PM on way.

Just buy a reasonably priced one that you like . Or go to a show room dealer with new and second hand caravans . This will give you an idea of cost and what you like And what is around at what price. There are some very nice second hand caravans . But to begin just get something to start. See how it goes . You won't lose anything on it over a year and if your not happy you will get your money back.
Then you will find out if it suit you. If not you can change it. The cost will be storage . Insurance and servicing .
The important part would be to make sure your car is able to tow the caravan . But most caravan dealers will help with this.

When you have read the book get a damp meter before buying. I looked at about 15 damp vans for my son before getting a dry one.

Both the Haynes 'Caravan Manual' and the 'Caravanning Handbook' both written by John Wickersham are good books to have but the manual is more about caravan repairs whereas the latter is more about caravanning in general which I recommend and covers about every topic you need to know about caravanning which I consider is the better of the two to have as a starter book. It can be found at most caravan accessory shops or you can purchase off the internet but there are two which is the first edition (which I have) plus a second edition. The link below is merely for reference purposes so you can shop around for the best price.

First edition:  http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Caravan-Handbook-Enjoying-Improving/dp/1859608019/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372551698&sr=8-2&keywords=the+caravanning+handbook+by+John

Second edition:  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Caravanning-Handbook-John-Wickersham/dp/1844258300/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372551698&sr=8-1&keywords=the+caravanning+handbook+by+John

Caravan Manual:  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Caravan-Manual-John-Wickersham/dp/1844256782/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1372551698&sr=8-3&keywords=the+caravanning+handbook+by+John

Your'e welcome and hope you find the caravan that will suit your needs. There's loads of information in the recommended book I mention which will help but there's always something extra that you need to know and that's when this forum is useful. Good luck anyway with your caravan search.
