We hitched up our new bailey ranger the weekend for only the second time.
Whilst attaching the breakaway cable to the car I noticed the end that attaches to the caravan had become detached!
Now I think of myself as fairly technical and think, using common sense, that I located where it was originally attached (a hole in handbrakes mechanism plate)but there were no obvious signs anywhere in the grime showing a hook had detached.
I currently have a real phobia of the van going off on its own down the motorway!!
You may laugh at the newbie, but only last week I was following a HSS Hire vehicle towing a very large trailer. You can imagine my shock, when said trailer became detached and set its own course into a row of innocently parked cars along the road. Thankfully no one got hurt!!!
I wondered if anyone with a similar van could post a pic or offer me the hindsight of their experience. It would be greatly appreciated and let me sleep at night.
you can buy breakaway cables in any caravan shop and also most car acc.shops to .the caravan end should have a substantial large split pin type ring which you feed through the hole you found .its a ten minute job and about £4 for peace of mind .
to put yourself at ease find a couple of for sale baileys in a dealers (or even possibly in your neighbourhood) and have a look underneath tomake sure of fitting point .
but i know your right anyway LOL

The hook hasn't detached just the hook from its fixing point.
I think I'm going to do just that and pop into a local dealer. Its just I know from searching around the last couple of months there aren't any rangers about in my area. But I'll check out some baileys.
there us usually a metal ring that connects the end of the cable to the hole in the underside of the brake lever. This is a simple metal ring which you need to open with a pair of pliers fit the ring to the brake & to the cable then close the ring together again this can be a bit difficult but the ring is the "break away" bit of the cable designed to have sufficient strength to pull on the brake before opening up to break away.
some other cables are attached with a key ring type ring but the designed weak spot is usually in the cable make up its self

there are 2 types of breakaway cables.one with a spring steel gate to the clip, which must be looped back & clipped to its self.
the other type has a solid steel gate like a caribina
this can be clipped direct to a fixing on the tow bar
i recently changed mine (for cosmetic reasons) and i found the best way to open the O ring slots was to insert a flat bladed screwdriver into the slit then twist it ,once started work it along with pliers or mole grips
