Just returned from a weekend away in our 1999 abi sprinter. I noticed when we got home that the wheel hubs were warm to touch and the wheels and tyres warm too. they weren't so hot that you could not touch or keep your hand on them but warmer than I would have expected. just had the van serviced 3 weeks ago and the engineer had to re adjust brakes and told me that bearings etc are all fine.

Is this normal or should I be worried?

I have a 450 mile journey next weekend and don't want any problems.

Also when I start and stop the van makes a clunking noise, again is this usual/

Sounds like the brakes are sticking to me, especially when you say they adjusted the brakes. Take it back to the engineer who adjusted them.

Or it could be that the handbrake wasn't fully released or hasn't been adjusted correctly causing the brake linings to make slight contact with the brake drums.

The OP says they were only warm, he could keep his hand on them. Isn't this no more than one would expect through normal braking?

Every time the brakes come on heat is generated in the hub.

If he had said he had burnt his hand then there might be cause to be concerned.

As for the clunking noise that could be a worn hitch damper.

the heat generated by the tyres will also be transferred to the wheels as well so that will make them warm

Tyres do get warm to touch under normal driving. Also so do the brakes, try and touch your car brakes when you park up. I think you'll find you won't be able to touch your car brakes without burning yourself. I'd your drums were warm I would say that is normal and also shows some good driving, warm indicates light braking hot being hard braking so you have been driving smoothly without sudden braking.

Heat described doesn't sound unusual, and all should be in order since the van has recently been serviced.
regarding the "clunking noise", if it is the hitch damper I would have expected the engineer to have spotted any significant wear.
What type of hitch is it? If Winterhoff or Al-ko stabiliser type, look for worn/broken friction pads. If an ordinary, non-stabilising hitch, look for wear in ball and/or socket.
Also check hitch, tow ball and tow bar for any loose bolts.
A chat with the service engineer would be wise - "clunking" indicates the possibility of progressive wear if left unresolved.

Brakes and tyres on my van do get warm under normal use. Yours sounds ok but the service engineer should be happy to double check his work for your peace of mind. Better to ask his expert opinion that tow with crossed fingers!

As above - it's normal for your tyres / wheels to get warm.

If you touch your car tyres after a journey you will find they are warm also. I tend to touch the caravan ones if we stop at a services etc and they are always warm.

I just touch them to make sure they are not hot as that would be a sign of some problem.

Yes pretty good practice to touch the tyres/wheels when stopped for a break. It does give an early warning of potential bearing/brake/tyre issues.

thanks guys, I think from your comments the heat from the wheels is normal. I will ask the caravan engineer about the clunking noise although he did check the hitch and pushed it backwards to check the damper and he said it was ok. I wasn't sure if warm wheels was usual- at least now I can stop worrying and concentrate on looking forward to my hols!
