I have seen a beautiful motorhome, but just wondered whats other peoples opinion. At least there isnt any towing problems or reversing etc, but when you get where you are going you cant go anywhere without unhooking.....Do I sell my beloved caravan for a motorhome or stick with what Ive got.....

IMHO it will depend whether you move sites on a more or less daily basis or pitch up erect the awning and use the site as a centre for touring the area.
In the first case the motorhome would make sense in the latter the caravan.

No we dont move, when we are there we stay. It was just the simple idea of not towing and all the stresses ad strains that go with it that made me just wonder if a motorhome would be a bit more pleasant to take on holiday and less stress. I just hate the reversing bit, especially in heat like we have

True! And there is less wear on your clutch.
I don't think motorhomes are that easy to reverse either though. We like driving our towcar. Can't imagine enjoying driving a truck/lorry. Then there are the single glazed front windows (cold in the winter) and the wasted space due to the cab, steering wheel engine etc.
And you pay more for this!

We still have our caravan, but there might come a time when we will change to a MH, so we actually hired one for a weekend ( yes it wasn't cheap) but it gave us an idea of exactly what we could expect with a MH. And we loved it, we do tend to pitch up and stay put even with the van, we do occasionally go out, but as we have dogs with us you can be restricted a bit. So for us it would be a good thing, and should we want to ever venture out, we'll catch a bus, or if we organise it a bit take the MH.

Adopt a rescue, rescue dogs make great pets, don't support puppy farms.
The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.

Each has it's pros and cons. Not only do you have the issue of packing up everything when you go to the shops, you have the problem of parking too.
On the plus side, you can simply get in and go away on a whim, no need to hitch up, no reversing issues and it's a lot more common for a motor home to pull into a layby for a night than it is for a caravan.

Like others have said it horses for courses. We have hired motorhomes and now own a caravan.
Motorhome is easier to drive IMO as you are considerably shorter than car and caravan. Downsides are fuel consumption, very noisy ( it is a van after all ) and once pitched you are stuck. Its the small things like popping to the supermarket.
Caravan is great for us as I have a company car, so the fuel is free. There is more room like for like as no cab taking up space. You can pitch up and use the car to explore. Servicing and insurance is generally cheaper than for a motorhome too.

We spent many years caravanning before we bought our motorhome. We love it and enjoy the freedom it gives us. We didn't buy a massive one as we wanted one which we could park at the supermarket when needed. It is app 21ft long.
The downside is that you do have to look more carefully at the sites you are going to.We definitely look for ones near bus routes even though we cycle a lot. The difference in fuel costs is minimal. As for packing away before going out when on site it takes us less than five minutes.
As for towing a car, well we might as well tow a caravan.
After saying that when we have finished wandering all over the UK and Europe in a few years we may go back to a caravan.

We are in a seasonal pitch simply because i love caravaning but hate towing after a nasty accident once, when the kids get older i think we will go for the motorhome option an get out on the open road

Been there and done that. Had an MH for 2 years. Uncomfortable, difficult to park, used a lot of fuel, hopeless to visit favourite places and cost and lost a fortune!!
Stick to your caravan unless you want to tour Europe in which case hire one. They said live the dream but.......

Its certainly not something to be done on a whim. it needs long and hard thought. We recently made the change after caravanning for 33 years and I have recorded our thought processes here. I enjoy driving a motorhome more than towing. Reversing is easier but of course you are usually reversing a much larger vehicle so extra care is required. Economy we have found to be quite a bit better than our tow car. AS Path 20 says you have to be more careful in ther selection of campsites, particularly if you go for a bigger motorhome which is not so easy to take out for the day. WE are still getting used to the idea but somehow doubt there is any going back.
