We were off for the first week of the school holidays. From just before we went there were so many issues let me begin...
On the Thursday night whilst out for a walk, hubby announced that he thought his car mot was out of date, so he'd need my car [thankfully the tow car] for work. Only I needed it for hair appointments plus the big shop for both us going away and for leaving food here for out daughter. Managed on the Friday to sort out his car and get a lift with a friend for the shopping![](forum_images/smiley20.gif)
Saturday morning our DS decided that as he was so excited about the holiday a 5.30am start was a good idea. Only our teen had just gone up to bed, so she took it in her head to go down and start world war 3 with him. She actually was shouting 'You are going to wake up mum and dad you know!' [err no he wasn't i'd clocked him getting up, but had dropped back to sleep....until she started screaming ]
Then when we did come down, i noted that our dog was acting a bit odd in the garden....i just knew that our house cat had got out....yep. Took over 3/4's of a hour of looking round the neighbourhood. Eventually found the little b*gger sound asleep under a tree in our other neighbour's garden .
All this time hubby was slowly getting the last bits and pieces in the car....we were finally off [he did say he could see that it would have been him and our son going away, with me joining them later in the week!]
South of Stonehaven and on the dual carriage way, there was a loud bang, followed by a wump wump wump noise. Our first ever blowout on the caravan and on the drivers side . Thankfully hubby was able to pull up onto a verge initially, whilst i took a wander down to a steading just about 150-200 yards from where it happened. The guy was in and once i'd explained what the issue was and could we possibly pull into his yard to sort it he gave us the go ahead. So back to the car and we limped along the road and got pulled in.
Boot emptied [including dog as it was so hot] to get to the caravan jack that hubby had berated me for buying 4 years ago. Hubby starts removing wheel nuts....and the brace snapped . Thankfully the farmer had a multi one so that was soon resolved. Hole punched in 'van floor but not major [hopefully].
Trying to get the spare wheel out from under the van was a nightmare Surely there has to be a better design than that!! But any way wheel then changed and then we had to get the spare wheel frame back together....holy hell. Any way.....boot repacked [including dog ] and an hour and a half later we were back on the road.
We had snacks in the car, but no sandwiches etc, so just before we got to the Forth road bridge son was complaining about being hungry. So hubby chose to pull in at the services as it was easier with the van and it meant a pee stop for us [and the dog]. Son spotted a boogie board for the sea, got that as well as sarnies, juices etc. Once again we were off.
Handing out the food, hubby looked at me as i was munching and said 'err where's mine?' doh forgot his so promised that once we got to Yellowcraig I'd rustle up his late lunch rather than us stopping for a driver swap.
Finally almost 4 hours later than planned [and with one of the group starving ] we were on site and pitched.
Let the holiday begin....yeah!!
Only not quite...
For the preceding 4 weeks I'd been having real trouble with a flare up of my IBS [with the added complication of having a planned hysterectomy due in September for health reasons], and at 5am on the Monday morning I woke up in the most horrific pain. Took buscopan, imodium and even had a rehydrate sachet to try and help. We had to travel to Livingston to get a new tyre. Whilst there I felt increasingly unwell. Tyre sorted, then hubby said that there was something wrong with my car just to add to things. Travelling back to Yellowcraig the ring road was blocked due to an accident [hope everyone was ok] we managed to quickly pull off and go the round about way back to the caravan.
After tea [which I couldn't eat] we all went to the beach for son to try out his new board, but I felt so ill that I had to return back to the van. Stopping on the bench in the car park I had to give serious thought about my next move. The phone coverage is patchy to say the least there, and I realised that I needed some serious medical help. So stopped at the wardens and asked for help. Phone call from reception to NHS 24. Explained everything, but a nurse wasn't free. They said I'd get a return call within 2 hours...but this meant any time between then and 10pm. Plus nearly an hour back to the hospital in Edinburgh. I said I knew I needed medical help and sooner rather than later. Also I had to think about our son. He's 10...and is autistic so a sudden change in routine and a really late night would have meant a screaming dervish to deal with. So I made the choice to not have a nurse call back, and my details were getting passed on.
By this time I knew I couldn't walk back to the beach to find the family, so got the car and went to go break the news. Thankfully as I got to the barrier I spotted the soggy group returning.
Quick change of clothes for son [including jammies etc for him], I threw some clothes and toiletries into a bag also...just in case. Off we went.
Was called through quite quickly to triage....but didn't get back unlike some that were there at A & E....nope ended up being on a drip with bloods being taken, chest xray and an abdominal ct scan. Finally at the back of 1am i had to get hubby to take son back to the caravan as he was getting more and more stressed [the novelty had loooong worn off] and the hospital admitted me to their surgical obs ward.
So the holiday for me was then 5 nights in hospital, with the threat of having to undergo an emergency hysterectomy, needles galore, an mri scan, drugs in liquid and hard forms and a view that didn't match the brochure . The nurses and staff were fantastic even under some strained circumstances [why do some people think that it's acceptable to be rude and berate the staff in a hospital...even to the stage where one lass was 'getting advice' about what was wrong with her from a friend via texts![](forum_images/smiley7.gif) I kid you not!]
The caravan site were in contact with hubby the whole time I was in...and if I had had to have an op they had already talked to him about the fact they would have just moved the van around to what ever space there was even if it meant staying on the late arrivals pitch over night, but that they wouldn't see him stuck
Late on the Saturday afternoon i was finally given the go ahead to go home....with loads of pain relief and instructions for contacting my own Dr as soon as i returned....so i got one more night at the caravan, which having been in the roasting hospital room was soooooooooo cool. I slept like a log.
Our journey back was totally uneventful [thankfully] and i spent all last week sleeping and taking tablets .
At least being back home when the call comes [Dr's been in contact with my consultant to see about pulling forward my date] the support needed for son is here rather than being 4 hours away and him and hubby being in the 'van.
Unfortunately we've had to cancel our last week of the school hols away as we were due to go to the west coast again to a site at Arisaig. Thankfully due to the reasons, the campsite owners have allowed us to transfer our booking to next summer
So.....now i need another holiday please to recover from this one I am so aware that things could have been far, far worse. For that I am grateful.
[jeez this was a long post.....sorry!]
