Have decided not to go away this December to save money and spend the holiday at our beloved second home instead.

Has anyone else done this and do you have any pics?

We have never been away for Christmas in the caravan but we have talked about it previously. I think what deterred us was the fact that spending Christmas together as a couple can be a bit lonely but if you happen to have friends or family that also share the ownership of a caravan then I think you can have a good time through the festive season so it's not so bad. Rather than spending time watching TV in a small space trying to keep warm we thought that we may as well stay at home. I think I need to get out more!

id love to do it but i like all my family to come to me for dinner on christmas day ,however i like the 28th or 29th when just my oh ,me and our two dogs are going away for new year.

We went to Beddgelert Forestry site one year. It was lovely waking up all snug in the van on Christmas Day, frosty outside. I part cooked Christmas dinner and took it with us. There were plenty of other people camping, including a man in his 80s in a tent who apparently did it every year.

I now go away at New Year instead with about 6 or 7 other vans.

Go for it. You never know till you try.

We have been for the past 4 years, last year was in Keswick, had a great time, site was full and the town was busy all over Christmas, I would say think about your location as we went to Padstow one Year at it was deserted/mostley closed for the holidays, but everyone has a preference on what they go away for anyway.

I've mastered the art of a Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings in a Caravan Oven too! Plus the 101 things to make from leftover Turkey afterwards

We were discussing where to go last night, I quite like the idea of Nora's trip (above) to Beddgelert, nice site we have stayed there before.

Definatley give it a go Neil!

we have xmas at home but we do go away the day after boxing day for a week, we go to a site for 2 evenings to see freinds who live away from us then travel to a school and use the school facilities along with many other for 3 days leading up to new year, new years day and the day after, no ehu, on a school playground. BRILLIANT. then on new years day between the 4 caravans of us we all cook a large sunday lunch with starter and pudding. really good. We did this many years ago with our 2 kids-when they stopped we carried on, 3rd year-'dont go away mum, stay and spend new year with us' so we did, we sat there like darby and joan and they all buggered off out. SO no more, me and the boss are off.

We did it one year though the evenings getting dark much earlier than we are normally used to on site did get a bit of getting used to.
Make sure your oven's large enough for what you might want to roast - ours was tiny and we had to cut our duck into bits to get it all in - still tasted good though.
Be prepared to be dazzled by some of the lights and decorations people put up around their van - many of them were more than we bother with at home, but it was all rather jolly and put our 3 inch high fibre optic christmas tree to shame!

Well you lot have pretty much convinced us!

Great idea about pre-cooking the turkey.

Did a big family Christmas last year with all the kids etc. so a peaceful couple of days on our own (OH has to work in between) sounds quite appealing.

we usually have xmas in morocco or spain .i do a big gammon joint instead of a turkey . have all the other trimmings . even make mince pies xmas morning after a swim . havent had one at home since 97. best get your vans loaded and head south . thousands do.

Spent xmas in the caravan last year for the first time, plenty of food and drink, just chilled out watching telly, had a great time.

I know if we had stayed at home we would have been catching up on the house work as we both work full time.
