Hi this is our dreadful experience after buying a 2012 swift caravan from Catterick Caravans after using the van for only 2 nights in winter (without using the fridge) we went on a rally and after lighting the fridge on gas it caught fire after about 2 hrs use quickly put out by our fellow campers with water and by isolating the gas.thankfully the van was saved with only damage to one side panel.
Horrified a frighten by this we returned the van to Catterick caravans who offered for our peace of mind to replace the van if we gave the a extra £4000 re refused this offer ..
Catterick Caravans after dealing with you happily for many years I would not now buy even tent peg off you..
how do you sleep at night disgusting...
That's shocking tbh absolute disgrace. I'd pass it to my insurers and let them argue with the company tbh but I can understand anyone's reluctance to contact insurance companies these days.
Good luck in getting it sorted amicably

Hi thanks we paid Catterick Caravans Outdoor
Leisure world £245 in Oct.2012 for a. 12 month Catterick Caravans Guarantee . For what it's worth Catterick advice us to just go through our insurance. I feel this a easy getout for them and will I not fall for this. Ithanks for reading this post as I will not let this issue drop hope to keep you informed. Ted Jen life long and totally disiallusioned caravaners
If you go through your caravan insurance they will send an inspector to assess the damage. If it is down to a faulty appliance then you have some ammunition to claim damages and compensation from the dealer in due course but you need the evidence first so this is the best route to take. The dealer will take much more notice of an official report than you just making a verbal complaint.
I'm confused, you bought a 2012 van in October 2012 and paid £245 for a guarantee?????
I would also add that the fridge would not be built by Catterick or Swift, if it caught fire, I'd be claiming on the full waranty supplied with the van. I expect the Thetford or Dometic rep will be very concerned and the unit would be replaced along with any other parts required.
Must admit, in all my years, I've never heard of a fridge catching fire on it's first use and I guess the damage must be extensive after have a fire inside the caravan.
Unfortunately, you must give the dealer the opportunity to put it right.
Hope it all works out
As the cost to repair the van is less than £800 they will not do a independent investigation so I am going through a different route and will not let this matter drop
Hi could I point out that the flames and smoke came out of the fridge vent after the fridge ran on gas for about 2 hrs and was extinguished quickly thankfully by fellow caravaners from the camping caravan club.
So the Only damage was to the fridge door after the fire brigade pulled it out we had no other damage to the inside of the van..
We will be away for 2 weeks from Friday so we will not be able to use our computer But when we return we will see if anyone can download photo.s for us they are quite shocking. Thanks for your comments.
Ted
Horrible thing to happen but I'm not sure you can blame the dealer. Even if the PDI includes testing the fridge on gas (which I doubt), they'd turn it on for 30 seconds and then turn it off - that's not going to give it time to catch light.
I would blame the manufacturer rather than the dealer. Presumably, your insurance will pay for the repair (?) so, although it's a pain to sort out, is it worth spending the next 6 months fighting over? That's why you pay for insurance...
