]after buying our first van 3 yrs ago a 2 berth we decided to get a 4 berth so as to have the room for the grandchildren. my wife looked online and found a nice van so we went and looked at it and met the salesman (glossop caravan owners son) we told him what we were towing with and did the deal.  the van needed a few repairs and we were given a collection date of about 2 weeks so we had time off work and had planned to go away until we got a call the day before to say it would not be ready as it had not even gone into the workshop. we picked it up a week later and had a few short trips out with it but noticed stability problems towing looked into it and found out it was well over weight for

A useful reminder to all that it entirely up to YOU to check out what you can legally tow, both on your licence and on the outfit matching.

The CC and the C&CC have services to help and an abundance of website like this and also whattowcar.com type sites.

Not great dealer service I agree however if you have made the point of telling them your details

Why is it the dealers responsibility to tell you what you can tow and what you can't?
Would you expect a car dealer to advise you that a certain car was more suitable than another, or an estate agent to advise that you should have 4 beds and not 3? Sales people will sell you what you say you want regardless of its suitability, that is their job.
You should go full armed with all the information you need before you enter into a purchase, which in the case of a caravan includes info about your cars ability to tow.
Having said that Glossop caravans tried to sell me a van using the unladen weight and not the mptlm. I walked away as I knew I could not tow the van.

Sorry I don't get this, in your wisdom you bought a caravan that was too heavy for the car, of course its Glossop fault, then they let you down on the repairs and next news is you bought a brand new van off them sorry this is the most confusing story I ever heard. Then you going on to say your friend fridge packed up and that hes got 15 months warranty ah but not with glossop,in price of his second hand van he has paid £444 for warranty with an insurance company called auto protect and its them that decide what is covered by the warranty not glossops ,also he can take his van to any dealer he wants but before anyone can do repairs on that van they must phone auto protect first to get the go ahead. And if Glossop did not get the go ahead off auto protect rest assure no other dealer will either. How do I know all this I read the small print and I know what my car will tow legally,Glossops are not shiny bright star by no means but let be fair to them too

I think you will find there are lots of dealers names that pop up, we have had no problems with Glossop caravans.
we will when the time comes buy another van from them. we were there to have a look around a couple of weeks ago we looked in the bargain corner at the vans, they have a description on the center window staying that they have not been checked.
then to our amazement a chap ask us what does damp look like, I suspect a lot of the remarks do come from people like this chap who do not know what they are looking at buy a duffer and they say Glossop caravans are to blame.
I think the name bargain corner says it all.
Glossop must be doing something right judging the amount of people there

I would have expected that a reputable dealer would have pointed out that the caravan they were selling was a completely unsuitable match for the tow car, and I think it's pretty poor of them not to have done so.

Knowing that they were so cavalier in their attitude to my safety (and that of others), there's no way on this earth I'd have given them any more of my money and bought a brand new van from them!!!

they did ask me and also other family members about what tow car was being used, maybe people should just ask or look it up the information is very easy to find.

Actually Glossops are partly to blame for this as it is their policy to check the match of car to caravan, they don't have to but this is what they say they do. When we were looking at buying a coachman but also updating tow car they explained this to us and said that with our current match they could not sell us the caravan, its all entered into their database at point of quotation and match is calculated.   So for the owners son to be behaving this way is shocking and sends out a very worrying message about the ethics of Glossop caravans from the very top.

I recently posted a similar complaint against Glossop caravans concerning a caravan we agreed to buy from them and paid a deposit. Later same day manager phoned to say they had made a mistake and wanted 1400 pounds more! Took over a month to get deposit back after complaining again to them. Not at all surprised at them allowing a customer to buy an overweight caravan for their towcar. I would not go anywhere near the place after the issues we had with them...
