Hi, I am fairly new to caravaning. My question is can I drink the water that comes out of the taps in my caravan? Currently we buy bottled water to drink and use the water in the caravan for washing etc. I do have 2008 Avante with new water filters etc and new aquaroll? I am the thought I have is that legonella bacteria can build up in the water pipework when not in use. I have cleaned the pipework but still unsure.
You won't have any bugs in the pipes. When you fill the system run plenty of water through it and all will be well. The hot water tank should get hot enough to kill any bugs there. We drink ours, rinse toothbrushes etc. No probs.

This is an often discussed subject and you will find people who do and suffer no ill effects and others who have suffered illness. From my point of view the water systems in caravans and motorhomes lay static for weeks on end and bacteria can build up unless the system is regularly cleaned. For drinking I much prefer to use bottled water and always freshly fill the kettle from the site taps for hot drinks. Some have a small plastic container which they use for drinking purposes and some use the Brita type filters.
I clean my system at the start of the season with PURICLENS
and this stuff really does get the system clean. But I would never drink the water personally, although the pipework is initially clean and sterile, it is all to easy for bacteria to enter the system via aqua-roll and open ended water inlet etc. We use a separate water container for drinking etc which is easily sterilised every trip. I do quite a lot of rallying and all my fellow caravanners seem to use a separate container. Not worth the risk in my opinion.
We have a large jerry can and keep that filled for drinking and making tea, even though we had cleaned the system my husband was violently ill after taking his tablets using water from the caravan tap so we don't take any chances now.

Totally agree..

I use Puriclean from Halfords or order same from eBay. I use it at the beginning of the season and again half way through the year. In between times I make sure the system is drained down and always air dry my aqua water tank after each trip. You should do that with all water containers as well.
It isn't really necessary to keep buying new drinking water bottles from the supermarkets all the time, you can simply refill the same one from the drinking water tap on site. I have one in case the water runs out at an inconvenient time!
We use bottled water, always have. If we ever run out, which is extremely rare,, I fill one of the bottles freshly from the tap on site and use that. I use the morrisons cheapy one 18p a bottle. There was a post on here about this recently where one of the forum members was extremely thorough about sterilising their aquaroll and water system. They changed the pipes on the water pump for some reason so out of interest, cut open the old pipes EUGHHHHH even they were surprised what gunk there was, they posted a photo. So very glad I don't drink from the system, I think I'd have been sick
The Elsan tank cleaner gets rid of lime scale as well as bugs. We have the clear plastic water lines with red/blue stripes and you can see there are no gungy deposits. All hoses need to be food grade and Aquarolls should be cleaned regularly too.
I have always drank the water with no ill effects. I too cleanse the system at tbe beginning of the season and have a new aquaroll in which when its filled up put a capful of liquid puriclewn in (safe to drink ) it purifies the water. As we use the van most weekends, if I am leaving the van for say a couple of weekends I will draw through some of the puriclean water through the system and leave it standing in the pipework, then, when I use it again, just run enough new water through to purge the system. As I said, never had a problem both in my caravan days and my previous years with motorhomes.
We dont drink the water from the taps even though the system has been cleaned out.We use empty plastic milk containers which we fill at the water point and then keep in the fridge.
I have often wondered how people who dont clean the system dont get sick but then its a chance they take.

I often wonder how I made it to adulthood!
I caravanned with my parents for 18 years from birth, from 1976 onwards. We always drank the water from the taps in the van. Would never have occurred to my dad to do anything else, and I'm absolutely certain he never would have cleaned it with anything.
We were always fine, but I'm sure cleaning the pipes with some kind of cleaner or something is sensible.
I worked in pubs for a long time, and we used to clean the (beer) lines there weekly. Run the solution through, let it sit for an hour, then run through with water until all traces are gone. Jobs a good 'un.
If you're very concerned, you could always clean your van lines weekly in the same way I suppose, plus at the beginning and end of the season.
