Is it illegal to leave a towing caravan on the street for several weeks? My neighbour brought home a caravan, cleaned it and has left it on our narrow street. It isn't attached to a car, the legs have been put down - he has a perfectly good driveway also, but has made no effort to move it onto there. The thing is I can see this remaining there permanently if no one says anything to him.

I think you'll find it's down to local bye-laws or whether it is deemed to be causing disruption to the traffic flow.

Find it a bit odd - if I paid good ££ for a 'van, I wouldn't leave it on the street!

I know - but they are a bit odd. He has a flash car and sits in it blaring music out. I think he prefers his car on the drive ...

Who would I contact to ask in my area if this is legal or not? Obviously I don't want to ring the police for something like this?

It's illegal to leave a caravan parked on the road at night unlit, if I remember rightly.

Possibly, from a police point of view, as long as it does not cause an obstruction. When parking your caravan try and park it as considerately as possible for other residents in the street.

The caravan MUST be lit at night if it is parked on a road and comply with the other normal parking rules (the nearside must face the pavement so the rear lights are at the rear for approaching traffic).

Some Local Councils also take a strong line on the nuisance value of the caravans and do, in some cases, take legal action. It is also worth checking with them before parking in the road.

There are sites where you can park caravans off the road, if you cannot park it on your premises.

These rules also apply to any similar trailer parked on a road.

If a vehicle is left on the public highway without any tax then the Police have a legal right to contact the rightful owner with a vision of towing the vehicle away within a specific period if it continues to go untaxed. However, as a trailer does not legally require a road fund licence the issue can be rather complex regarding parking on the public highway. If it is being parked on a temporary basis then the local council and Police may turn a blind eye but if it is parked on a permanent basis then the law may be different so the best policy is to visit your nearest police station first for advice but I bet they will advise to write to your local borough council regarding the issue. If this is the case then take related photo's and record any dates applicable to when the caravan was first stored on the highway etc. in support of your complaint.

I would have a quiet word and point out that it's partially blocking the road, if that doesn't work, complain to the council who are responsible for the roads, or phone the local police on their local number.

I think you would need to contact the local or county council, as the police have handed parking regulations over to councils.

There may be a perfectly good reason why the owner has done this with his/her caravan. Lots of things my neighbours do bug me but unless I can help them I prefer to keep my nose out & live & let live. If they're breaking the law with this caravan, no doubt those who are paid to enforce it will sure to be on their case.

The blaring music is just to flash himself "Look at me "". We get a lot of this and just hope they push off quick as it could be any time of the night. But I have seen many caravans parked on a road. There are those that have all the security they can manage and their van gets stolen and there are those that seem not to care a darn and it stays put.

But I would also be cautious about this as if he turns nasty will he get you back somehow. Let it ride a while he may move it for winter if not he may also get it clobbered by someone skidding into it.

have a caravan parked on my road now for over 2 years slowly rotting, never moved. tried talking to the guy as he also has 3 cars parked on here too, lives in a terrace so no driveway so parking on here is really bad, he wasn't interested, says there is nothing stopping him. contacted my local council who said basically not their problem as there is no law to stop him. no doubt it will be something else that he will eventually scrap as has done with his other vehicles.
