This is the second time we have come down with really bad D+V while away in the caravan, out of 10 trips this year 2 have been a disaster because of it. we drink bottled water, but clean teeth and wash up from caravan taps. have we just been unlucky to be ill while away or are we doing something wrong.
p.s have sterilized the water system, and caravan is only 10 months old.
Any thoughts
------------- Life is too short to not spend it camping!
It could just be that you have had an underlying bug but when your away you relax and unwind so it comes out.
We find it happends when working hard for ages then we have a few days of and we go down with a cold.
It like how its sunny all week then rains for the weekend.
------------- She may be old, she may be rough around the edges but she is our home from home and we love it.
We use food grade hose to fill the Aquaroll on fully serviced pitches. Perhaps there is some ingrained muck in the system somewhere? The Elsan stuff will fix it!
We have never had upset tummies from using the vans water system.
I always use the caravans tap water to brush my teeth and even use the water to take tablets etc.
I use sterilising tablets that you use for baby bottles etc.
I fill the water barrels, Drop some tablets in and leave it for about 20 minutes. Moving them every so often to make sure there is no part left above the waterline.
Then i flush the whole lot through the water system. Leave it there for about 20 minutes, Then flush through with clean water.
Just a thought but are the windows open without the fly screen being closed, Ime OCD about flies getting into the caravan. I have a dog and the smell of dog food does seem to get them to come in, so I stand over the dog whilst he eats and if there is anything left its cover up tightly. My friend had a dog and a fly got onto the food but the dog ate it anyway and she had S/D for 2 days and was really ill. Could it be something other than the water is what I am saying and going all around the houses to say it lol..
A lot of sterilising solutions use chlorine. Chlorine eats aluminium and caravan hot water tanks are made of aluminium. I know the sterilising stuff is diluted, but over time...
The Elsan stuff won't attack your water system and will remove scale and other bacteria trapping junk.
Is you fridge cold enough? Also with the oven in our caravan you have to cook everything for longer than it states ie if something should take half an hour it takes about 45 mins in caravan oven so it might be worth checking things are properly cooked if you have used the oven.
I suspect that your "bug" was collected from the food or drinks you had away from the caravan, and nothing actually to do with the 'van, as such.
A change of diet, different foods, different drinks can all give you the same result.
One thing I get very fussy about while on campsite (and at home!) is hand washing. Not that somewhat ineffective hand sanitiser stuff but proper soap and hot water hand washing. You're in a lot closer contact to the great outdoors while camping, you're perhaps using communal facilities and if you're not you've still got to handle things like the toilet waste disposal system.
So just make sure everyone is washing their hands properly, including before preparing food and before eating. I know it might be a pain to lug in and heat extra water just for this but it is worth it to keep bugs at bay.
Mel was looking at a 'van that was for sale when we went to buy some bits from a dealers accessory shop the other day (she just has to compare and contrast!). She opened a drawer and it was liberally decorated with mouse droppings, so were the cupboards! She beat a hasty retreat. The 'van was a year old and the dealer had no idea.
Nature is pretty close to us when we go caravanning!
