Still contemplating our first caravan. We are looking at 5 and 6 berth vans with lengths ranging from ~6.40 to ~7.2m. How much of a difference does length make to towing / manoeuvring? Will this sort of difference in length feel significant? We will be towing with aMazda 6 estate so are looking at lightweight models to keep to our 85% kerbweight.

0.6 metre will not make a difference. It's about the length of your arm.

Not much difference to towing generally but manoeuvring a 7m plus van will take a bit of getting used to for your first van.

That said the longer the trailer the easier it is to reverse.

Depends on your storage. Where i store mine it was a tight squeeze, The owner must have got fed up of people getting bigger vans and asking for larger spots.

When we 1st got the spot i had a 17ft overall van, But the replacement was 22'6". Right on the line.

Sister went from a 17ft van to a 19ft one also. She had to leave her van in the middle of the yard for a while until a spot became free.

We had a 21ft van which I towed fine being a complete beginner. Then very soon moved to a 24ft van which was concerning me slightly but once I got on the road it was ok you just have to watch the cornering a little more due to the extra length. Manoeuvring I find about the same really, but then again, I don't mind that bit at all anyway. Go for what feels best for you

We've now got a van which is 7.2m long (and a bit longer than previous ones). The extra length makes maneouvring a bit tricker but we also have a motor mover so it's not a big deal. On the open road the difference isn't that great, just a bit more care when cornering. What makes more difference to me when driving is having a car / caravan combination that is well matched.

What's more important is the suitability of the layout for your needs. There's no point having something a bit smaller but regretting the compromise on beds / space. If you've a family with children the layouts with bunks are worth the extra length.

When looking for our van we looked at layout and weight first and as we fine tuned our choices we ended up with two probables, both with fixed bed. I was tempted to go for the slightly shorter one, (by about 15 inches) thinking it would be that much easier to tow but decided to opt for the longer one at 7.2m as it had the best layout for our needs. Little things like which side the fixed bed is on can be very important.

In practice on the road as NLMS says the difference in lengths is negligable, however we got a bonus on ours with an extra 4 inches of width the year we had ours, that was probably trickier to get used to than the length issue but without doubt it has proved it's worth for us, the extra space inside is great and it's amazing how quickly you get used to the caravan's external dimentions when driving it. My tip, get the basics right first.
