we have decided to move from our folding camper to a caravan. we are looking for a 4 berth and have about £1000 to spend up to £1500 for one that really ticks all the boxes. we are just finding that any in that price range in my opinion are not much better than scrap. we know we wont find anything brand new and it will have a few problems. looked at one yesterday seller said was solid and dry. traveled an hour to view and found the floor so rotten that it was just crumbling away underneath. went to look at one at a dealers this morning and was rotten around the front window and was just generally tatty and not very clean. now cleaning we can do but really want something that wont fall apart on our first trip out. are we asking to much?
Best time to buy is end of the season oct/april when people will be upgrading or those who have bought a van dont like caravaning.Ive a tee shirt which says "I looked at 1000s before i bought this".You can pick up an excellent buy at that time for your price..
thanks guys. we have untill may next year to find one but if we find one before hand then would use it. we have another to look at tonight an older one 1990 avondale pearl. again says dry but time will tell. only just up the road so thats good.
A good 80s-early 90s lightweight to go for is ABI Monza or Marauder. Usually plenty of these on ebay & fact that there are so many suggests these caravans seem to be generally sound. I've got a mid 80s Monza on its third season of trips to southern France & all I've realy done to it apart from chassis service & new tyres is squirt plenty of sealant along the exterior joints & around the grab handles.
Whatever you buy, budget for new tyres even if the ones fitted stil have plenty of tread as they may well be years old & also a chassis service, mainly wheel bearings & brakes.
I bought my one for under £1500 but it did take six months of looking to find a suitable one. But was worth the wait, now have one I'm really happy with and it is a four berth
